Andy Murray his team admit they remain puzzled by the cramp attack which struck the eighth seed Scot during his opening round at the US Open. With Murray desperately trying to lift his game following a title dry spell which has lasted for 14 month, every little detail of his training and nutrition regime has been under scrutiny by his handlers.
And the Murray brain trust remains unable to come up with an exact cause for the breakdown a week ago.
Murray showed no signs of the problem as he dispatched German Matthis Bachinger in straight sets in the second round. But getting to the bottom of what bothered him is now a top priority.
“It’s very difficult to know exactly why that happens,” said Murray. “You can train as much as you want, drink as much. You know, I could have just missed something with my eating or drinking. That’s definitely a possibility.
“Maybe I could have eaten a bit more before the match. A few players have had some issues the last few days. I don’t know if it was purely down to the conditions or not. But I’ve played in hotter, more humid conditions than that and have been fine. So I don’t know.”
Meanwhile, the 27-year-old says he feels nothing but fit. “I hope I feel better every day now. I felt fine the last couple days. I practiced well and didn’t have any problem.”
