NOBODY "BAGELS" ROGER FEDERER , HE WINS HIS 6TH WESTERN & SOUTHERN TENNIS OPEN , THE BRYAN BROTHERS WIN THEIR 99TH TITLE

That second set problem Roger Federer had made this a longer match, but it didn’t make much difference to the final outcome. David Ferrer just can’t solve Federer. In the course of more than a decade of facing his Spanish opponent, Federer has won all sixteen meetings.

But, surely, what Federer cares more about, right now, is that he won Cincinnati. Not that he needs trophies from this event, which he has won more than anyone else in history (this is title #6). But it’s a Masters title. It’s title #3 of 2014 for Federer (following Dubai and Halle) — but it’s his first Masters title since he won this tournament two years ago. Talk about a boost going into the U. S. Open.

Plus it’s career title #80. That’s not only the most among active players, it’s third all-time, behind Jimmy Connors and Ivan Lendl. A nice day for his stats sheet, at least.

Rankings-wise, it doesn’t make much difference. Federer came in at #3, and there he stays. But he is now only about 3200 points behind Rafael Nadal, and with only 180 points to defend at the U. S. Open. He’s only about 500 behind Nadal in the ATP Race. Win the Open, and he might rise to #2 — and even have a shot at the year-end #1. Even if he loses at the Open, his chances for the year-end #2 look pretty good.

David Ferrer failed to win his second Masters, but he took some real steps to break his slump, and he rises from #6 to #5. And he’s at #5 in the Race, too, up from #8. It was looking as if he might not qualify for the year-end Championships. He still isn’t clinched (unlike Djokovic, Nadal, and — we’d say — Federer), but it now looks like a good bet.

The ATP reports that this is the first Masters final ever where both finalists were more than thirty years old.

Doubles – Final: (1) Bryan/Bryan def. Pospisil/Sock 6-3 6-2

And, with that, it’s finally over. Pospisil/Sock won Wimbledon (beating the Bryans in the final, as a matter of fact), and won Atlanta, and made the final here before suffering their first loss — but, when the loss came, it was routine. The match took 53 minutes, and the Bryans won 60% of the points; they were never broken, and broke three times.

Talk about a big relief! It is the first title for the Bryans since Monte Carlo, and it means that Bob, who now has 99 titles, can win career title #100 at the U. S. Open. (Mike is at 101 titles.) That would also be title #100 for them as a team. Even if they fail there, they’ve strengthened their grip on the top rankings, and moved a little closer to the year-end #1.

Pospisil/Sock see their streak end at 14, but that’s the longest streak ever recorded at the start of a partnership. Even if they never again have a streak that long, one has to suspect that there are a lot more wins to come.

Nicolas Mahut could really use this (or any) win right now, but because it’s only a Round of 32 at a 250 point event, it isn’t going to make much real difference.

Singles – First Round: B Becker def. P Carreno Busta 6-2 2-6 6-1

Benjamin Becker is having a very solid year, and Pablo Carreno Busta hasn’t done much since the clay season. So no big surprise here.

Singles – First Round: D Brown def. A Gonzalez 6-3 6-2

Alejandro Gonzalez has fallen out of the Top Hundred, and this appears to mean he won’t be making it back.

Singles – First Round: R Haase def. B Paire 6-4 2-6 6-2

Still no sign of recovery for Benoit Paire, who, like Gonzalez, has fallen out of the Top Hundred and appears stuck below that mark.

Singles – First Round:

Noah Rubin is an eighteen-year-old with no ATP experience, and it perhaps showed. He kept falling behind and catching up. But that strategy generally doesn’t work in third set tiebreaks….
