NOTES

– The women’s final will feature World No. 1 Serena Williams against No. 11 Ana Ivanovic. Williams holds a 6-1 edge in the all-time head-to-head, including a 2-1 advantage this season.

– The match up of Williams and Ivanovic assures the Western & Southern Open will have an 11th different champion since the WTA’s return to Cincinnati 11 years ago.

– Williams has reached her 79th career final and owns a 61-17 record when the title is on the line. She has won a WTA-leading four titles in 2014.

– Williams, who turns 33 on September 26, is the oldest player to reach the final in Cincinnati in the Open Era.

– This is sixth time Williams has played the Western & Southern Open and she is seeking her first title here. The only other event she has played six times without claiming the title is Sydney. She has won her 61 career titles at 24 different tournaments.

– While six of the past eight women’s champions have been ranked in the WTA Top 10,

Williams would be the first player to hold the No. 1 ranking at the time of winning the title.

– Ivanovic has reached her 21st career final and her fourth in 2014. She has won 14 career titles, including three this season.

– Ivanovic leads the WTA for match wins with a 47-12 record in 2014.

– Roger Federer owns a 15-0 head-to-head advantage over David Ferrer heading into the men’s final. Their last meeting was a three-setter last week in the Toronto quarterfinals.

– This will be the first-ever men’s final in Western & Southern Open featuring players over the age of 30. Federer is 33, Ferrer is 32.

– Since 1899, 17 previous Western & Southern Open men’s finals have featured a player over the age of 30. The last was in 2012 when Federer won the title.

– Federer would be the second 33-year-old to claim the title, joining Bill Tilden who did so in 1926. Only Ken Rosewall (35 in 1970) and Andre Agassi (34 in 2004) were older when winning the title.

– Federer holds the all-time record for most singles titles in tournament history with five.

– Federer has tied his coach Stefan Edberg for most Cincinnati singles finals appearances in the Open Era with six. William Talbert holds the all-time record with seven from 1943-51.

– Cincinnati is the seventh tournament where Federer has reached the finals at least six times:

Basel – 10 finals (5-5)

Halle – 9 finals (7-2)

Wimbledon – 9 finals (7-2)

Barclays ATP World Tour Finals – 8 finals (6-2)

Dubai – 8 finals (6-2)

Cincinnati – 6 finals (5-0)

US Open – 6 finals (5-1)

– Federer is in his 38th career final at an ATP Masters 1000 event. He is 21-16 in those previous finals. He has lost in his last four finals appearances, with his last title coming here in 2012.

– Ferrer has reached his 44th career final, though this will be just his 15th on a hard court. He has won 21 career titles, including one earlier this year in Buenos Aires.

– Ferrer is contesting his seventh career ATP Masters 1000 title. He is 1-5 in his previous finals.

– Ferrer is the sixth Spaniard to reach the Cincinnati final in the Open Era and he is trying to become the third winner: Rafael Nadal (last year), Carlos Moya (2002). Other Spaniards to reach the final: Juan Gisbert (1971), Manuel Orantes (1973) and Juan Carlos Ferrero (2006).

– Bob and Mike Bryan will be attempting to win their 99th career title. The twin brothers are appearing in their 150th career final. They will be attempting to win their fifth Cincinnati title.

– The winningest duo in ATP history, the Bryans have finished as the No. 1 team on the ATP World Tour nine times in the past 11 seasons.

– Vasek Pospisil and Jack Sock first teamed up at Wimbledon earlier this year. They have gone 14-0 as a duo since, establishing an ATP record for most matches played by a team before suffering their first loss. Their run has included titles at Wimbledon and Atlanta.

About the Western & Southern Open

The Western & Southern Open will be held August 9-17, 2014 at the Lindner Family Tennis Center, 20 miles north of Cincinnati in Mason, OH. The tournament is one of the prestigious ATP Masters 1000 events on the men’s tour and a Premier 5 event for the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), making it one of only five events in the world outside of the grand slams with events of that caliber occurring during the same week at the same venue. The tournament is also one of the last stops on the Emirates Airline US Open Series before the US Open in New York. Since 1974, the tournament has contributed more than $9 million directly to its beneficiaries: Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, the Barrett Cancer Center and Tennis for City Youth.
