Editors note : Today we heard from our dear friend Honor. It is her last day as the curator of the world’s greatest tennis museum. It is the world’s greatest because of her timeless , boundless efforts & energy and hours she devoted to the sport of TENNIS. The All England Lawn Tennis Museum is open almost daily throughout the year. If you are in London please make a visit there it’s amazeballs.
On The Queen’s Birthday (14/June) The curator of the Wimbledon museum Honor Godfrey was awarded the MBE . MEMBER OF BRITISH EMPIRE. SHE WILL HE INVITED TO BUCKINGHAM PALACE TO BE HONORED BY THE QUEEN OF ENGLAND.
I had the honor of meeting Honor Godfrey in 2010. We were in London in November for the men’s end of the year championships at the 02 arena. She is always a very , very , busy and focused lady. We felt blessed that she made time to see Lovey and I. Lovey has known Honor Since the late 1980s or early 1990 . Lovey had helped collect some players clothing items including Pete Sampras shoes and Richard Krajiceks shoes and winning attire & a pair of Gussy Moran’s panties, among other things. Lots of the staffers here @ 10sballs.com are collectors. Some as long as 50 years . So we realize the level of devotion and sheer brilliance that Honor has brought to the museum to the collection to the history if the sport
Honor is Always gracious and humble and very happy to have you see all the latest projects with the museum. I’d call it “her museum” but she wouldn’t like that. With Honor it’s all been teamwork. The museum is the BEST in the world. There are museums and private collections everywhere. But nothing even comes close to the Wimbledon museum. It’s in its own league by a country mile.
We’ve just heard from tennis collector and tennis historian Jeanne Cherry that this latest exhibit is fantastic. She has been there fairly recently.
Please if you are on the grounds of The All England Lawn Tennis Club please take some time and go thru the museum. It’s truly amazing. The museum shop is my favorite store on earth. It’s got real treasures everywhere too. Postcards. Posters. Keychains. Magnets. Everything and anything.
Last time we were there I remember the exhibit was Art Deco. It was really elegant. I remember a sample of what it feels like to pull the covers over the courts. That fascinated me.
We really stress the importance of making the museum a must see even if you are only at Wimbledon for the day. The museum is open all year round. So check out their website. Check out their link on our homepage.
