Melanie Oudin has qualified for the second round but she did not have an easy win against Vera Dushevina. After racing to a 5-1 lead in the first set, she quickly saw her advantage disappear before finally winning the set 7-5.
The surprises kept coming in the second set. The American was broken while serving for the match at 5-4 and Dushevina took full advantage, going on to snatch the second set 7-5.
Oudin, a surprise quarter-finalist at the US Open in 2009, again stormed to a 5-1 lead in the third set. However, this time she held her nerve and finally saw off Dushevina’s challenge, winning 7-5 5-7 6-2 in 2 hours and 20 minutes.
