Finland’s number one player Jarkko Nieminen defeated world no. 6 David Ferrer of Spain in the first round of the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam.
Nieminen took 76 minutes to defeat Ferrer in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. Ferrer who reached the semifinal of the Australian Open last month couldn’t find a way to beat the strong Finn.
Sweden’s Robin Soderling overcame Dutchman Robin Hasse 6-3, 6-2. The Swede now faces Philipp Kohlschreiber who beat Yen-Hsun Lu 6-4, 7-6.
Thiemo de Bakker outed lucky loser Philipp Petzschner 6-4, 0-6, 6-1.
Tomas Berdych demolished Spain’s Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-1, 6-2, and is now playing Dmitry Tursunov.
Ivan Ljubicic beat Sergiy Stakhovsky 7-6 (3), 6-3. Number eight seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is through to the second round after a 6-4, 6-4 win over qualifier Grigor Dimitrov.
