There was a player’s party last night as many of the top players stopped by and walked on the “Green Carpet.” A few of the top players even arrived in classic cars. The most noticeable “no-shows” were Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, and Maria Sharapova.
Here are my awards for the evening:
Best Time Management: Kim Clijsters was the first to arrive — right on time — wearing a green top. She was nice enough to stop and pose for a long time to let photographers get plenty of pictures.
Best Doubles Pairing: Serbian Ana Ivanovic and Romanian Sorana Cirstea arrived together in the same white classic car. Ana was wearing a black dress and Sorana was wearing a white top and blue shoes. Maybe if we are lucky the two will decide to play some doubles together in the near future.
Worst Dressed: Sam Querrey arrived in a red t-shirt and stood outside for a while. Before walking in, he talked to some of his people, walked back to his hotel, only to arrive minutes later with a blue flannel shirt. If you look closely, Sam still has the red t-shirt underneath!
Best Dressed (Female): Daniela Hantuchova was one of the first to arrive wearing tight jeans and a jean jacket. Her makeup and hair were also done nicely, so she gets this prestigious award (plus I am a big fan of her!).
Best Dressed (Male): Philipp Kohlschreiber arrived wearing jeans, a blue shirt and black sweater. He bothered to comb his hair, unlike the majority of the male players that arrived. His overall appearance was the sharpest.
Best Match with the Classic Cars: Elena Dementieva’s look seemed to best go along with the “classic” theme. She was wearing a silver shirt and dark jacket.
Best Michael Jackson Tribute: Spaniard Fernando Verdasco arrived in a puffy version of the Michael Jackson red Thriller jacket. He had a colorful flannel shirt underneath the jacket.
Biggest Party Pooper: Andy Roddick was one of the last arrivals, accompanied by coach Larry Stefanki. He left about 15 minutes after arriving.
Biggest Fan of the Camera: Jelena Jankovic arrived in a purple classic car wearing black pants and a khaki and silver jacket. She smiled for photos for almost 30 seconds, looking into each camera for a few seconds.
Most Interesting Look: Joe-Wilfried Tsonga was dressed in black, topping his off his appearance with a gray and red scarf. He also had an all-black baseball cap turned to the side.
Last Arrival: Rafael Nadal was the last to arrive in a blue classic car, but he at least had an excuse. He was supposedly on the practice courts late and quickly went to his hotel to change and make an appearance at the party.
Strangest Pose: Andy Murray arrived with a baby blue sweater draped over his shoulders and a white shirt underneath. When someone instructed him to pose, he smiled and held up two fingers on each side. Not sure if he was flashing peace or victory signs, but he certainly wasn’t telling us the number of Grand Slam finals he has lost.
