LOTS OF PLAYERS CHANGING SCHEDULES BEFORE WIMBLEDON BEGINS

David Ferrer, the world no.7 who has been a Wimbledon quarterfinalist for the last two years, has flown back home to Valencia for a major check up with his doctor and rates himself as doubtful for the Championships that begin next Monday.

The 32 year-old Spaniard has been feeling unwell for some time with a viral infection he believes to be gastric influenza. Ferrer withdrew from this week’s Topshelf Open in the Dutch seaside town of ‘s-Hertogenbosch where he was top seed.

‘I’m not sure if I can play at Wimbledon,” said Ferrer who maintains he fell sick in the immediate aftermath of his quarterfinal loss to eventual champion Rafael Nadal at Roland Garros.

”It’s been 10 days now and that’s just too long for this problem. I’m going to talk with my doctor in Valencia tomorrow and see.”

Meanwhile there is better news of Nadal who over the weekend expressed concern about the pain in his back and suggested he would not be playing any exhibition matches on grass in the build up to Wimbledon where he lost in the first round a year ago and second round in 2012.

Nadal, currently back home in Mallorca for a few days rest and recuperation, has confirmed he will play at the BNP Paribas Tennis Classic at London’s Hurlingham Club, just across the River Thames from Wimbledon, on Friday (June 20).

Big names such as Queen’s Club champion Grigor Dimitrov, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Tomas Berdych, Kei Nishikori and Wimbledon champion Andy Murray are all on the Hurlingham cast-list along with Marin Cilic and Tommy Robredo. Nadal’s opponent has yet to be named but he said: “This will be my last warm-up match before Wimbledon, it’s always a pleasure to be back in Hurlingham.”
