Out of Indian Wells, Del Potro Hopes To Play In Miami

Juan Martin Del Potro continues to be hopeful of his left wrist will allow him to play in the upcoming Sony Open in Miami after quitting mid-match in the recent Dubai Duty Free Championships and then withdrawing from the ongoing BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells after using a doubles match to gauge his fitness.

The world no.7 was keen to play at Indian Wells after making the final a year ago but after teaming up with Marin Cilic and losing to Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic, Del Potro decided it was counter-productive to attempt his singles second round match against Feliciano Lopez and announced his withdrawal, handing a lucky loser place to Britain’s James Ward.

Del Potro has been suffering pain in his left wrist since winning the Apia International Sydney before the Australian Open and has been consulting Dr. Richard Berger at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, the surgeon who performed a career-saving operation on the Argentine’s right wrist in 2010.

Clearly mindful of the pitfalls of playing on with a similar injury, Del Potro said: “I’m not feeling 100 percent, and I’m not in good condition to compete and to try to win the tournament.

“I always like to feel good and feel the chance to win the tournament, and I’m not feeling that. The wrist is still bothering me a lot, and my doctors tell me to wait ten more days doing the treatment and do everything possible to play in Miami.”

In Dubai Del Potro admitted the pain in his left wrist is very similar to that he felt in his right four years ago that effectively sidelined from top-flight tennis for almost 12 months and saw his world-ranking drop from no.4 to no.485 at the beginning of 2011.

After leaving the Middle East, he flew to Minnesota to be examined by Dr. Berger and was then told to give the wrist a try at Indian Wells but to quit at any sign of intense pain.

“Sometimes it’s better to lose the tournament than lose a year,” he said. “The doctor recommends to me to don’t play here, to keep trying the treatment, and the next chance will be in Miami if I feel in good condition to win a tournament. Not like just win a match, you know. It’s a big difference. We will see in Miami. After that tournament, I will know what is going to be my future.”
