Qureshi Hopes For Pakistan To Host Davis Cup

Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi has called for Pakistan to be given permission to host Davis Cup ties once again.

The nation has not hosted a tie since 2010 because of security concerns, with the ITF either turning over choice of ground to the opposing team or ruling that the tie be played at a neutral venue. The policy has been in place since 2009, when terrorism forced the cancellation of sporting events there that year.

Qureshi, who won the Dubai doubles last week, said that things had improved. They don’t want to come and see if conditions are getting better or not,” he said. “We can easily play Davis Cup ties and other international sports events, but nobody has been willing to give it a shot. It’s very frustrating. Now again in Davis Cup, we are supposed to play Philippines at home but we are going away again to Philippines, so I don’t know how you can promote tennis if there are not any international events going on”

Prior to 2010, Pakistan had not hosted a Davis Cup tie since 2005, according to records on the Davis Cup website. Qureshi added that while certain regions could be considered dangerous, he felt others were suitable locations.

“Ever since people have started to know me and know tennis, I have not been able to play any international matches at home. I humbly request the international community to start having sports activities in Pakistan as well,” he said.
