Rafael Nadal is joining esteemed tennis colleagues including Roger Federer and Andy Murray in setting up his own management company to better direct the cash flow from a mega-lucrative tennis career more direct into his own pocket rather than paying big management fees to others.
Like Federer, Nadal parted company last year with management behemoth IMG, which also lost Federer when the Swiss and personal agent Tony Godsick – a former IMG employee – split off to set up their own boutique firm.
While Federer won’t be taking an active role while his career is still playing on the tour, his name power alone is enough to draw other players into the fold, most noticeably Grigor Dimitrov. Wimbledon champion Murray formed a subsidiary with his current management company to exclusively handle himself and his contracts.
Nadal, meanwhile, took advantage of publicity generated by his title last month in Rio on the ATP to announce a collaboration with footballer Ronaldo, with the tennis player working with the Brazilian on deals inside Brazil.
With the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics, the pact could be promising for the two sporting icons. Ronaldo’s sports marketing agency will now handle Nadal’s deals in Brazil and will fit in with an existing arrangement Nadal has in place with Goramendi Siglo XXI, which controls his worldwide image rights worldwide.
“Nadal is a lot more than just a new partner, he’s an idol that all of us learned to admire for his talent on the courts and for the kind of person that he is,” said Ronaldo in a statement. The footballer also works with Barcelona footballer Neymar, F1 driver Rubens Barrichello and martial arts fighter Anderson Silva.
