Acapulco
Australian Open finalist Dominika Cibulkova fulfilled her top seeding after a few rough showings since Melbourne, with the Slovak beating Poland Urszula Radwanska 6-3, 6-4 in the first round. “My serve was not 100% today, but I’m pretty happy with the way I played because Urszula is a tricky player and is always hard to play,” said the winner. Cibulkova had lost four straight matches dating to the Melbourne final. “I’m happy to win finally after Australia, I’m really happy to get back on track. That’s why I came here, to win a couple of matches.”
She was joined by 20-year-old birthday girl Eugenie Bouchard of Canada, who thrashed Shahar Peer 6-2, 6-2. Canada’s Sharon Fichman earned a minor upset of fifth seeded Austrian Yvonne Meusburger 6-1, 6-3. Aleksandra Wozniak joined in for Canada with her defeat of Australian Ashleigh Barty 7-6(5), 5-7, 6-2.
Third seed Kaia Kanepi moved past Jana Cepelova 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 and eighth seed Zhang Shuai beat American Madison Keys – now the highest-ranked teenager on the WTA after Bouchard left her teen years behind – 4-6, 6-1, 6-4. Victoria Duval beat Iveta Melzer 6-2, 6-4 and Yanina Wickmayer dispatched Lesia Tsurenko of the Ukraine 7-6(4), 6-4
Florianopolis
Czech Klara Zakopalova, seeded third, moved into the second round over London-based Croatian Donna Vekic 6-3, 6-3 while Brazil’s Teliana Pereira put out seventh seed Maria Teresa Torro of Spain 6-4, 6-3. Frenchwoman Alize Lim defeated Swede Johanna Larsson 7-6(5), 2-6, 6-4, Romanian Alexandra Dulgheru beat Mariana Duque 6-1, 7-6(5) and Kiki Bertens overcame Sesil Karatantcheva of Kazakhstan 6-4, 1-6. 6-2. There were wins for Danka Kovinic of Montenegro and Belgian Alison Van Uytvanck.
In the second round, Spain’s second seed Garbine Muguruza Blanco beat Chanelle Scheepers 6-2, 6-1. She was joined by sixth seeded Alexandra Cadantu, a winner against Dinah Pfizenmaier 6-2, 6-3, and Kazak Yaroslava Shvedova, who put out Czech Barbora Zahlavova Strycova 6-2, 7-5.
