Doha
Singles – Quarterfinal: (2) Agnieszka Radwanska def. Yanina Wickmayer 6-2 6-1
No surprise here, surely, and it won’t be any surprise if Agnieszka Radwanska wins this event. Even if she doesn’t, this win assures that she will rise to #3 (behind #1 Serena Williams and #2 Li Na); Victoria Azarenka, #2 coming in, will slip all the way to #4.
Singles – Quarterfinal: (5) Jelena Jankovic def. (3) Petra Kvitova 6-1 6-3
When Petra Kvitova finally ran out of gas, she really ran out of gas…. This costs her any chance of rising to #5; Maria Sharapova should keep that spot. Kvitova might even fall lower — with Jelena Jankovic one of the candidates to pass her.
In the Goofy Footnotes Department, Jankovic seems to be building a lot of off-the-wall streaks this year. In Australia, she faced three straight Japanese players. Here, she faced three straight players with a surname starting with “K” — Knapp, Kleybanova, and Kvitova.
Singles – Quarterfinal: (7) Simona Halep def. (4) Sara Errani 6-2 6-0
Probably not a huge surprise, given the surface and the two players’ recent results. But it means that Sara Errani will lose the #7 ranking. She will be no better than #8, and it will be #9 if Angelique Kerber makes the final or if Simona Halep wins Doha. If both those things happen, which is possible, then Errani will fall all the way to #10.
Singles – Quarterfinal: (6) Angelique Kerber def. (Q) Petra Cetkovska 6-1 6-0
Petra Cetkovska had played a monster match the day before, and is pretty inconsistent anyway, so perhaps it’s no surprise that she fizzled out in this contest (setting the tone for a day in which all the singles matches were pretty dull). Cetkovska still lasted long enough to put herself back in the Top Hundred. Angelique Kerber is still stuck at #9, but she looks like a real candidate for the final, and that could help her substantially — although Jelena Jankovic isn’t making it easy for her; they’re both gunning for #7, and they’re both active — and they face each other next.
Doubles – Quarterfinal: (2) Hsieh/Peng def. Niculescu/Zakopalova 6-1 6-1
And that’s that. Too bad they had to schedule this early in the day, before Errani/Vinci played — because this means that Peng Shuai has earned too many points for Errani/Vinci to keep up with her. Peng is our new doubles #1, with Hsieh Su-Wei the new #2.
Doubles – Quarterfinal: (1) Errani/Vinci def. (WC) Jankovic/Kleybanova 4-6 6-2 15-13
At least Errani/Vinci still have a chance to stay Top Five. Had they lost this match, even that possibility would have been gone. We currently show the Top Ten as follows:
1..(3) PENG ……………8005*
2..(4) HSIEH …………. 7885*
3..(5) Vesnina ……….. 7620
4..(7) Makarova ………..7421
5..(1) ERRANI ………….7270*
5..(1) VINCI …………. 7270*
7..(6) SREBOTNIK ……… 7185*
8..(8) PETROVA ……….. 5955*
9..(9) MIRZA …………. 5525
10.(10) HLAVACKOVA ………5175
Doubles – Quarterfinal: (3) Peschke/Srebotnik def. Kudravtseva/Rodionova 7-5 6-2
One more win and Kveta Peschke could return to the Top Ten.
Doubles – Quarterfinal: (7) Pavlyuchenkova/Petrova def. (4) Black/Mirza 4-6 6-4 14-12
This clinches Nadia Petrova’s Top Ten spot — and means that Cara Black won’t make it at this time. She will probably be #12. The last Top Ten spot will belong to either Hlavackova or Peschke.
