Ana Ivanovic emerged as the only winning seed on the day as the No. 9 advanced into the second round when Daniela Hantuchova retired injured trailing 7-5, 1-0. A similar fate befell Australian Open finalist Dominika Cibulkova as the tenth seed was unable to continue at 5-5 against Russian cancer survivor Alisa Kleybanova.
American Bethanie Mattek-Sands knocked out 15th seeded teenager Eugenie Bouchard 7-5, 6-1 after the Canadian flew in form and Fed Cup duty at the weekend, Lucie Safarova beat 16th seed Kirsten Flipkens 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.
Magdalena Rybarikova of Slovakia beat Italy’s former French Open winner Francesca Schiavone 7-5, 4-6, 7-6(3) to set up a match with Australian Open champion Li Na after a three-hour thriller. “It was a very tough match today,” said the winner. “Not only does Francesca have a tricky game, but it was pretty windy out there, and the temperature kept changing too – it was hot at the beginning but then it got colder as the match went on. I’m just happy I could make the second round.”
In other matches, Yanina Wickmayer stopped Andrea Petkovic 6-4, 6-4, Italy’s Karin Knapp put out beat Caroline Garcia 6-4, 6-1 and Swiss Stefanie Voegele upset Frence’s Alize Cornet 7-6(6), 7-5. Sorana Cirstea beat Alla Kudryavtseva 2-6, 6-1, 7-5, and Kaia Kanepi defeated American Varvara Lepchenko 6-3, 6-4.
