Laura Robson is finally back hitting a tennis ball after being told to take a concerted rest after wrist problems hampered her early year progress, forcing her to retire in Hobart, not play at all in Auckland and look far from her best at the Australian Open.
However it is currently unclear whether the 20 year-old British no.1 is still being coached by Jesse Witten with occasional advice from Eugenie Bouchard’s coach Nick Saviano.
Robson used her Facebook page to confirm she is back in training and has put in court time at the Lawn Tennis Association’s National Tennis Centre in Roehampton, close to her Putney home.
She posted a picture of herself back on the court alongside the words: “Finally got the all clear from my doctor to hit. First time holding a racquet in a month! #improvement.”
Robson has worked with a succession of coaches, failing to find the right relationship with any. Jo Durie, former champion said: “Things are never straightforward. You have all these dips along the way that you have to deal with and you have to look very hard at yourself.
“It doesn’t matter how many people are nagging you, if you don’t have the motivation to get out there every day, it’s not going to happen. Laura needs to think: ‘This is such a great opportunity I’ve got here.’ But what brings it all together is the work rate. Laura will always be having to work on her movement, like Lindsay Davenport and Mary Pierce.”
