Lindsted And Kubot Win The Australian Open Doubles.
* Lindstedt breaks Slam final losing streak.
Australian Open
Doubles – Final: (14) Kubot/Lindstedt def. Butorac/Klaasen 6-3 6-3
Jurgen Melzer had better get on the phone to look for a doubles partner. He was supposed to be playing with Robert Lindstedt here, until he got hurt. Suddenly, it looks a lot less likely that Lindstedt will be returning his calls.
It wasn’t even a very interesting final, lasting only an hour and five minutes; Kubot/Lindstedt faced only one break point, which they saved. The only question was whether they would get nervous at the end. Outwardly at least, they didn’t.
It must be a big weight off Lindstedt’s back. After three lost Wimbledon finals, at age 36, he finally picks up a Slam title. More: He shows he can win with someone other than Horia Tecau. This is career title #18 for Lindstedt, but ten of them were with Tecau, and that included his only career Masters (Cincinnati 2012). For a guy who had won at least one title in every year since 2007 (inclusive), it was a rather disappointing record. But he now has titles for eight years running, with seven different partners. And a Slam. Did we mention that?
He also puts himself back in the Top Ten. We estimate the rankings as follows:
1..(1) Bryan………….13040
1..(1) Bryan………….13040
3..(3) Peya……………7400
3..(3) Soares………….7400
5..(5) Melo……………5360
6..(7) Dodig…………..5290
7.(20) Lindstedt……….5095
8..(6) Marrero…………4880
9..(9) Paes……………4385
10.(10) Stepanek………..4350
When Lukasz Kubot first came up, he seemed to be a doubles specialist. Then he started to do better in singles, but he has faded in that area. At least he has regained his doubles skills! This is career title #9 for him, but his first Slam (indeed, his first required event of any kind). It won’t put him in the Top Ten — we show him at probably #14. But with the benefit of seeding and a Top Ten partner, it might come.
Eric Butorac and Raven Klaasen are still Slam-less, and it appears they will remain below the Top Twenty (after all, they came in at #48 and #45). But they seem to be a team on the move. The Top Ten may be a bit much to ask, but we’d guess they’ll be Top Twenty, and seeded, by Roland Garros.
