****** TODAY’S WOMEN’S NEWS ******
Brisbane
Maria Sharapova made a winning comeback from a shoulder injury as she claimed her first victory since June to advance over Caroline Garcia of France 6-3, 6-0. The Russian third seed in a field headed by Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka was working for the first time with new coach Sven Groenveld.
Sharapova will next face Australian qualifier Ash Barty, who booked the biggest test of her career 6-3, 7-5 over former No.5 Daniela Hantuchova. Barty was competing in a main draw for only the 15th main draw match. Sharapova is on the alert: “She is another future star and someone that I’ve seen grow up from the juniors and now onto the tour. She’s already played a few matches. But this a great opportunity for me to go out there and play another match against a tough opponent, also a tougher crowd as well, which is understandable. It’ll be fun.”
In other first-round results, Aussie Casey Dellacqua beat Galina Voskoboeva 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 and next plays second seed Azarenka. Former No.1 Jelena Jankovic, 2012 Brisbane winner Kaia Kanepi, German fifth seed Angelique Kerber and Spanish eighth seed Carla Suarez Navarro all went through.
