Bernard Tomic says that his new co-coach, Croatian Velimir Zovko, has already established a good repertoire with his suspended father, John.
Tomic father is currently serving a one-year suspension from ATP and Grand Slam tournaments for assaulting Bernard’s hitting partner in May. Zovko was just brought on last week.
“He’s starting to get into a good bond with my dad and team,” Tomic told Channel Seven. “It’s still important to have my dad there. He’s the one that brought me up and we spent a lot of time together. It’s very difficult for me to let him go. He knows what’s best for me and my tennis. Obviously this new coach is going to take his role and help out with my dad.”
In 2014, Tomic will represent Australia in the Hopman Cup in Perth, then attempt to defend his Apia Sydney International title before heading to the Australian Open. The 21 year old isn’t sure whether he can crack the top 10 this season.
“It’s difficult to get into that group now, so maybe top 20 is a reasonable goal,” said the world No. 51.
Bernard Tomic, who has had off court issues in the past and has been accused of not working hard enough, was recently pictured shirtless at his 21st birthday having a lap dance.
“I’m trying as best as I can and sometimes it comes out the wrong way, which is not good to see,” he said. “You’ve always got to think about what you’re doing and what the consequences are. Sometimes I don’t think like that. I’ve got to become a little bit more wiser and I think mature a little bit more.”
