Juan Martin Del Potro may roll back his vow to skip Davis Cup for the second straight season, with the Argentine world No. 5 conceding that he might take a fresh look at the matter in time for the April quarter-finals. He will not participate in the first round tie at home in February the week after the end of the Australian Open, but might be willing to return to the team afterwards.

Del Potro has not played Davis Cup since 2012 and has gone through a split with coaches and the national federation. The 2009 US Open winner said recently that he was tired of “hypocritical double talk” from tennis authorities in confrontation with his decision to do what is best for his singles ATP career.

The winner of four titles in 2013 made his apparently conciliatory remarks at a weekend exhibition against Australian Lleyton Hewitt: “After Italy, I’ll see what to do, I want to do the best for my career.”

Del Potro last played for his country in 2012 in the semi-finals against eventual champion the Czech Republic in Buenos Aires and then became champions. Del Potro beat Radek Stepanek in singles but had to retire form his second match with a wrist injury.

Del Potro’s match with Hewitt was another which he said pitted him against “one of my idols.” He also faced Roger Federer a year earlier at home when the Swiss broke new ground with a tour of South American in the off-season.
