Roger Federer is busy preparing for the 2014 season in which he hopes to erase all of the problems which plagued him in 2013. The No. 6 told sponsor Credit Suisse that his current close-season work at his base in Dubai will be aimed at rectifying the past year which resulted in only one ATP title.
“I would like to win about five tournaments again and play in great finals, that’s where I have most fun,” said the 17-time grand slam champion. “My ranking is less important to me, unless it’s about being No. 1. But it would be good to be in the top four or top eight, to get good seedings.
The 32-year-old who ended his worst campaign in a decade, said that without back problems to hinder him he feels ready to go all-out in practise in the desert heat of the Emirate. There were also no distractions like his tour of South American from last December which netted millions but compromised his 2013 season as well.
“I’m concentrating fully on my training; for once I won’t be participating in any exhibitions,” Federer said. “I can train hard in Dubai in December without any setbacks.” But he warned: “I think it will take until April for me to catch up completely with my training. For once, I’ll be opening the new season at the ATP tournament in Brisbane, then Australian Open.”
Federer also expects to try and make the chance to a larger-headed racquet, picking up from his ill-conceived experiment from last August when he tried it while dealing with back pain, “Those tests don’t tell us much because I wasn’t able to play properly in Hamburg and Gstaad because of my back problems.”
