No.1 seed Caroline Wozniacki, No.8 seed Victoria Azarenka, No.11 seed Justine Henin and No.23 seed Svetlana Kuznetsova eased their way into the third round on day three of the Australian Open.
Wozniacki continued untroubled on her path to a first major title with a quick win over American Vania King, 6-1, 6-0 in just 58 minutes while Henin took just 61 minutes to deal with Elena Baltacha (GRB), 6-1, 6-3.
The Belgian Grand Slam champion will now meet Svetlana Kuznetsova on Friday who had a straight sets win over Arantxa Rus (NED). BelarusianVictoria Azarenka also battled her way past Czech Andrea Hlavackova 6-4 6-4 on Margaret Court Arena while [4]Venus Williams fought back from 6-7 (6) and an injury time out to win in three.
After an initial hiccup the sixth seed Tomas Berdych (CZE) prevailed against World No. 35 Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany, 4-6 6-2 6-3 6-4, to progress to the third round where he joins the eighth seed Andy Roddick who also progressed for the ninth year in a row to the third round with a straight sets win overIgor Kunitsyn (RUS).
In the match of the day, [9] Fernando Verdasco (ESP) defeated Janko Tipsarevic (SRB) in a three hour and 52 minute marathon which saw the popular Spaniard come back from two sets down.
Verdasco will now meet Japan’s Kei Nishikori in the next round.
