The message to Rafael Nadal certainly seems to be, if you want to preserve your world no.1 ranking into the New Year then the best policy is to keep out of the kitchen. Despite two wins out of two in the round robin group stage, the Majorcan endangered his continued presence at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals by lacerating a finger.
The Spanish newspaper El Mundo Deportivo reported Nadal suffered the wound on his left hand (with which he holds the racket) while slicing bread for breakfast.
Nadal, who the previous evening celebrated his second win that guaranteed the year-ending world no.1 spot by making the five miles journey to Stamford Bridge and watch soccer team Chelsea’s Champion’s League 3-0 win against the German team Schaller 04, reportedly delayed his practice session by an hour.
He later reported no problems and should be fit to complete his group matches at the London 02 Arena later today against Tomas Berdych.
