Cagliari
Russia had has troubles over the past weeks scraping together a team with many of the country’s top players preferring to skip the final – but that’s not the case with Italy when the nations meet this weekend. The modest Tennis Club Cagliari will be sold out for the tie, with fans hoping for a fourth title in the competition for the hosts.
The Italians coached by former player Corrado Barazzutti, will boast a full side comprising Sara Errani, Roberta Vinci and Flavia Pennetta. Errani and Vinci will then mix it up in their role as one of the best doubles teams in the world as well. The Russians will have to work to earn a fifth fed Cup against the determined opposition and the home crowd support – even if independent-minded Sardinian islanders hardly consider themselves as “Italian.”
Sofia
The “junior” version of the WTA season wrap-up will get under way with crowd-pleaser Ana Ivanovic taking a starring box office role as a wild card in a field of less-than-household names in the Bulgarian capital. With the Tournament of Champions finding it tough over the years to carve out a niche on the calendar, the presence of the photogenic Serb can only help matters.
The round robin field is made up of winner of the lesser International-level tournaments from the 2013 season: Simona Halep – winner of the first five titles of her career this season – Maria Kirilenko, former US Open champion Samantha Stosur, Elena Vesnina, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Alizé Cornet. Bulgaria’s Tsvetana Pironkova joins Ivanovic as a wild card to lure in the local public.
The tournament will be holding its fifth edition after runs in Bali for three years and now Sofia since 2012. In the draw made Monday, Ivanovic and Pironkova face, off Maria Kirilenko plays France’s Cornet and Halep takes on Pavlyuchenkova.
