BILLIE JEAN KING GIRLS’ NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS IN SAN DIEGO
Sunday’s Schedule of Matches to Begin at 8 a.m. (PDT) at Barnes Tennis Center
SAN DIEGO Tennis Update • After receiving a first-round bye, top-seeded Gianna Pielet will play her Girls’ 16s second round match of the USTA Billie Jean King Girls’ National Championship on Sunday at the Barnes Tennis Center.
The 16-year old Pielet from El Paso, Texas will face Simran Chhabra of Irving, Texas at 9:30 a.m. The unseeded Chhabra defeated Annie Dong of Rockville, Md., 7-5, 7-6 in first-round action on Saturday.
Last month, Pielet captured the doubles title at a $15,000 USTA Pro Circuit event in Evansville, Ind., and earlier this year in January, she won the USTA National Winter Championships at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla.
Over 140 first-round Girls’ 16s matches were completed on Saturday with the majority of seeded players scheduled to play on Sunday after a first-round bye. San Diego’s Katherine Hui delighted hometown fans as she advanced to the Girls’ 16s second round with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Lela Daszuta of Evergreen, Colo.
Play in the Girls’ 18s draw will get underway on Sunday. Most of the Girls’ 18s seeds, including top-seed Kayla Day of Santa Barbara, Calif., received a first-round bye and will play their opening matches on Monday.
