NEWS TIDBITS •

– The 2017 US Clay winner Steve Johnson begins his title defense Tuesday night against last year’s semifinalist Ernesto Escobedo. Johnson is bidding to be the first player to repeat as US Clay champion since Andy Roddick in 2001-02.

– The youngest and oldest players in the field will be in action on Tuesday, with a 21-year difference in their ages. The youngest competitor is 18-year-old qualifier Miomir Kecmanovic who will face seventh-seeded Ryan Harrison. Ivo Karlovic, the 2007 US Clay champion, is the oldest player in the singles field at 39-years-old. He is facing Taro Daniel.

– Seven Americans will take the court in singles action Tuesday, including two all-American match ups during the evening session. They are part of a group of 15 USA players in this year’s field, which is an all-time record for a 28-draw ATP World Tour event. That also equals the tournament’s Houston-era record which was set in 2003 when the event was a 32-player draw.
