If you’ve watched any of the women’s matches at this year’s Australian Open, you’ve likely seen the Adidas and Nike kits on full display. The colors are okay – but just OKAY – I mean, pink is my favorite color but this blush version Nike is using doesn’t do it for me.
The biggest insult to my Fashionista Chic Meter, though, is those horrid shorts they’ve put on the likes of Angie Kerber, Madison Keys, and Elina Svitolina. What gives?
These women are athletes in every sense of the word. They are strong. They are fit. And, let’s face it, they have great legs!
The Nike and Adidas shorts make these spectacular women look like the Weebles of my childhood, all egg-shaped at the bottom with no flattering silhouette in sight. Is this an attempt to de-sexualize female athletes in light of the #MeToo movement? If it is, I guess you could call it a success. As a woman, though, I have no problem with strong, fit, beautiful women in clothing that highlights their assets just like I have no problem with Rafa in his retro-sleeveless shirts showing off those gorgeous guns.
Come on, Designers. You can do better. Much, much better.
Editors Note: We agree with most of the ladies clothes comments. And “poofy” shorts too, did you see?
But the men’s clothes are fantastic! We still think Lacoste makes a huge mistake not just having their players wear all their fabulous color shirts. You know the Classic Lacoste Polo in 100 cool colors?
Roy Sakaguchi at Nike. You hit another home run. The small side cut in RF shorts and style. Awesome! • Shoes awesome! Wins on side… Nice touch as usual.
The NIKE kit with the RAFA Pink was great! And Fila is Always beautiful. Saw Martin Mulligan watching his FILA man Marin Cilic from the players guest box. That’s what should be called. The players never sit in their box.
But the biggest clothing question is simple.
How is it possible that Simona Halep, who is in the finals with CAROLINE, are both vying for World WTA number one? And they are also vying for their first SLAM Title. Ok. So Simona leaves Adidas after 10 plus years. Word was she was getting a mil. Word was Nike was ️maybe willing to pay 2 mil. Bottom line the 2018 Aussie Open started.
And Simona is a “BLANK BILLBOARD.” Is that a fumble on the agents part or what?….. Wow. Every match we expected to see something on her clothes. Some kind of patch deal. Blank. Empty. Sad to see the opportunity lost.
