Hingis caps off perfect U.S. Open with women’s doubles title, Anisimova best of the girls

Make it two titles at this year’s U.S. Open for Martina Hingis. Just about 24 hours after winning in mixed doubles with Jamie Murray, Hingis teamed up with Yung-Jan Chan to triumph in women’s doubles on Sunday afternoon with a 6-3, 6-2 rout of Lucie Hradecka and Katerina Siniakova.

Hingis and Chan were utterly dominant in this one, recording 22 winners to a mere two unforced errors and they did not face a single break point.

Speaking of utterly dominant, the Swiss–who turns 37 years old later this month–now owns 25 career Grand Slam titles. She has captured 13 in doubles, seven in mixed, and five in singles. Interestingly, she defeated Chan’s sister in the mixed final on Saturday.

“What I have done in my career earlier, I’m very proud of that,” Hingis assured. “I was very young (when I turned pro). It’s been 20 years…on and off. But I think today is even more…. It’s different; it’s sweeter because it’s also the way how we won.

“I mean, we just played impeccable pretty much from the start to the end. We didn’t let the nerves kick in…. I think we didn’t let anybody to even believe or have a chance, especially today.”

“It’s been a very amazing journey to make it all the way here,” Chan added. Since the first day we agreed to play together, (the) next day I said, ‘Oh, Martina said yes to me. That means I’m going to play beside my own idol, and we are going to fight together.’ That’s a huge step for my whole career. And now again to win this title together, it’s really amazing.”

The girls’ singles title went to Amanda Anisimova on Sunday. In an all-American final, just like in the women’s singles event, the 16-year-old got the best of 13-year-old Cori Gauff 6-0, 6-2.

“I definitely wanted to achieve something big,” Anisimova commented. “This is just amazing, and I’m so happy that I won the title.”

Anisimova’s victory means that three different American girls won junior Grand Slam singles titles in a single season for the first time ever. Whitney Osuigwe prevailed at the French Open and Claire Liu lifted the Wimbledon trophy.

“The success of our women and girls this year has been dramatic and comprehensive,” said USTA Player Development GM Martin Blackman. “It is a reflection of the fact that the pipeline is full, and it will have a huge, demonstrative and inspirational effect on all our players, male and female.

“When we look at our prominence in the Top 100 and the up-and-coming girls, it is a tribute to a great partnership between USTA Player Development and our best private-sector programs and coaches, with the USTA recognizing the invaluable role that our country’s great private-sector coaches and programs play in the development of American champions.”
