Milos Raonic pulled out of the upcoming U.S. Open on Wednesday, citing a left-wrist injury that has plagued his summer. Raonic lost his opening match at the Rogers Cup (Masters 1000 tournament in Montreal) earlier this month and then withdrew from last week’s Western & Southern Open (Masters 1000 event in Cincinnati).
“I have tried everything in my power to rehabilitate this injury in time for the US Open in order to play an event that is so truly special to me,” the 11th-ranked Canadian posted on social media. “However, the pain is too great and, in consultation with my doctors, I am left with no option but to withdraw from the event.
“I am crushed to miss this event and a chance to play in front of the fantastic New York crowd, but I truly had no other options. I am already back in the gym starting my rehabilitation, and hope to be recovered and back on the court in a matter of a few weeks. I look forward to rejoining the tour healthier and stronger and finishing the 2017 year in proper form.”
Raonic joins Stan Wawrinka, Novak Djokovic, and Kei Nishikori on the U.S. Open’s absentee list.
Wawrinka, the 2016 winner, is on the shelf with a knee injury. Djokovic is sidelined by an elbow problem and a right-wrist issue is keeping Nishikori out of action. All three players are done for the rest of the season. The absences of Raonic, Wawrinka, Djokovic, and Nishikori from the year’s final major mean four of the top 11 men in the world are missing.
With Raonic’s withdrawal, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will be a top eight seed even though he is ranked No. 12. Lucas Pouille, a quarterfinalist last year in New York City, becomes a top 16 seed. Juan Martin Del Potro moves into the all-important No. 24 seed and Robin Haase is now the last seeded man at No. 32.
