British stars Heather Watson and Naomi Broady are set to shine on a bumper opening day of the Aegon Classic Birmingham. Watson, the British No.2 behind Johanna Konta, is up against second seed Elina Svitolina in one of the most eagerly anticipated first round matches on the Ann Jones Centre Court.

Broady, who comes to Birmingham fresh from her run to the semi-finals of the grass-court Aegon Manchester Trophy, also has a tough first round in prospect. The 27-year-old from Stockport takes on talented Frenchwoman Alize Cornet.

The day’s play will be preceded by a special opening ceremony, with returning two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova joining Ann Jones and ‘Maud Watson’ in period costume on court to get the tournament officially underway.

With another sunny, warm day forecast in the Midlands, tennis fans are set to flock to the Edgbaston Priory Club for a feast of women’s sport. Away from the Ann Jones Centre Court, other highlights include the chance to see former Roland Garros champion Garbine Muguruza in doubles action with Dominika Cibulkova, Roland Garros doubles runners up Casey Dellacqua and Ashleigh Barty and India’s Sania Mirza – always a Birmingham favourite – joining forces with big-hitting American Coco Vandeweghe.

Sunday proved to be a disappointing day for top seed and World No.1 Angelique Kerber, who announced she was withdrawing from the tournament with a left hamstring injury. This resulted in a new draw and a change in seedings (see below). Kerber is set to return to competition at next week’s Aegon International Eastbourne.
