TENNIS TIDBITS•
– Jack Sock’s win Thursday moves him to 19-5 this season, tying him for the most match wins on the ATP World Tour in 2017 with Roger Federer (19-1) and Rafael Nadal (19-5).
– The win by Fernando Verdasco was the 200th of his career on a clay court. He is just the eighth active player to reach that milestone.
– Steve Johnson’s 14-12 first set tie-break win over Dustin Brown tied the Open Era tournament record for longest tie-break. Horacio De La Pena defeated Claudio Messadri 7-6(12) 7-5 in the 1993 semifinals to originally establish the record.
– Both John Isner and Sam Querrey used their big serves in their wins on Thursday. Isner fired 20 aces against Leonardo Mayer, the fifth-most in a US Clay match since 1991. Querrey was one off that pace, firing 19 against Horacio Zeballos.
– Americans went 5-0 during Thursday’s second round action. It was a much different story for the Argentines, who were 0-4.
– The five Americans into the quarterfinals is the most at this tournament since 2002.
– With one all-American matchup Friday, the U.S. is guaranteed at least one semifinalist, extending a streak that dates back to the tournament’s move to Houston in 2001.
– Should Americans win all four quarterfinal matches, it would be just the second time at US Clay in the Open Era that all four semifinalists were American. The only previous instance was in 1998 (Andre Agassi, Jimmy Arias, Jim Courier and Lawson Duncan). If three get through, it would be the fifth time in the Open Era and first since 2002 (Agassi, Andy Roddick and Pete Sampras).
– Should the top four seeds– No. 1 Sock, No. 2 Isner, No. 3 Querrey and No. 4 Johnson – all advance to the semifinals, it would be just the fourth time the top four make up the final four in the Open Era, and the first since 1986.
– Seven of the eight seeds have reached the quarterfinals, the most at US Clay since the tournament moved to a 32-player draw in 1988.
– For the second year in a row, three past champions are among the quarterfinalists. Sock won in 2015, Verdasco in 2014 and Isner in 2013.
– Twenty-year-old American Ernesto Escobedo has reached his first career ATP quarterfinal. He is playing his ninth career ATP World Tour event.
