SEEDS AND DRAWS ANNOUNCED FOR THIS WEEK’S

128th ANNUAL PACIFIC COAST MEN’S DOUBLES CHAMPIONSHIP

Tournament to be Played March 2-5, 2017 at La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club

Tournament officials have announced the seeds and draw for the 128th Annual Pacific Coast Men’s Doubles Tennis Championship, which will be played Thursday, March 2 through Sunday, March 5 at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club, 2000 Spindrift Drive, La Jolla, CA 92037.

The tournament continues the tradition of giving dual seeds to the top 16 collegiate doubles teams and the top 16 independent doubles teams entered in the event.

The top-seeded collegiate team is Arjun Kadhe and Lucas Gerch of Oklahoma State University. Kadhe, a three-time All-American, captured last year’s Pacific Coast Doubles title with OSU teammate Julian Cash. Gerch, a native of Berlin, Germany, won the 2015 Pacific Coast Doubles Championship with former OSU teammate Nicolai Ferrigno.

The number-one seeded independent doubles team is Deiton Baughman and Krzysztof Kwinta, who are members of the USC men’s tennis coaching staff. Kwinta is an associate head coach and Baughman is a volunteer assistant coach.

The four-day doubles tournament is the second-oldest tennis event in the United States and will feature players from many of the top NCAA Men’s college teams along with a strong field of independent players, which include teaching pros, promising juniors, college coaches and former tour players.

The following collegiate teams will be represented at this year’s Pacific Coast Doubles Championship: Boise State, Boston College, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, Oklahoma State, Pepperdine, San Diego State, Stanford, UC Berkeley, UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC Los Angeles, UC San Diego, University of Portland, University of San Diego, University of Southern California, University of Toledo, Villanova and William & Mary.

“The players love coming to La Jolla to play doubles this time of the year. We have another outstanding field for this year’s event,” said Tournament Director Bill Kellogg. “We invite tennis fans to come and enjoy the matches. It’s going to be a spectacular four days of top-flight doubles action.”

The opening match of the Pacific Coast Men’s Doubles Championship will begin at 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 2. Action will continue on Friday, March 3 at 8 a.m. Matches are scheduled to get underway at 9 a.m. on Saturday, March 4 and Sunday, March 5. (All times are PST)

Named “Club of the Year” for 2011 by the San Diego District Tennis Association and one of the “Top 50 Tennis Resorts in the World” by Tennis Resorts Online, the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club’s reputation as a top tennis destination started when it attracted its first major tournament – the Pacific Coast Men’s Doubles Championship in 1942. The tournament is one of the five-oldest tennis events in the world and the second oldest tennis event in the United States. First held in 1890 at The Hotel Del Monte in Monterey, California, the event was created to promote the sale of real estate on the Monterey peninsula. The original concept pitted the best players from the East versus those from the West. This coast-to-coast rivalry was the inspiration for the Davis Cup.

Past winners of the Pacific Coast Men’s Doubles Championship include some on the greatest names in tennis, including Jack Kramer, Ted Schroeder, Bobby Riggs, Pancho Segura, Don Budge, Tony Trabert, Stan Smith, Bob Lutz, Arthur Ashe, Dennis Ralston and John McEnroe.

The Club is also scheduled to host the USTA National Hard Court Championships for Women’s 50-90 age groups and La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club Hard Court Tournament for Men’s 60-85 age groups on Monday, May 8, through Sunday, May 14.
