* Strycova up to #16 after beating Wozniacki in Sydney; Wozniacki to stay #20

* Konta tops Kasatkina to reach #9

* Radwanska easily beats Duan; Bouchard upsets Pavlyuchenkova to assure she will stay Top Fifty

* Larsson latest seed eliminated in Hobart; #1 Bertens, #3 Niculescu only seeds (and only Top Fifty players) left

Sydney

Singles – Quarterfinal: (2) Agnieszka Radwanska def. (Q) Duan Ying-Ying 6-3 6-2

Agnieszka Radwanska can’t rise above #3 this week, but she has big points to defend at the Australian Open; this may help her stay #3, or even rise to #2, after that.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (6) Johanna Konta def. Daria Kasatkina 6-3 7-5

With this, Johanna Konta moves past Svetlana Kuznetsova to reach the #9 ranking (a good thing, given that she too has big Australian Open point to defend). Daria Kasatkina will probably be #25.

Singles – Quarterfinal: Barbora Strycova def. (10) Caroline Wozniacki 7-5 6-7(8-10) 6-4

These two came in just a few dozen points apart, but this separates them quite a bit. Barbora Strycova passes Elena Vesnina and Venus Williams to rise all the way to #16; Caroline Wozniacki will stay stuck at #20.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (WC) Eugenie Bouchard def. Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-2 6-3

Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova will stay at #27; Eugenie Bouchard is starting to add points, and will rise from #49 to probably #47. Obviously that’s promising, but she started last year strong, too, and then it all came apart.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (1) Mirza/Strycova def. (WC) Brengle/Rodionova 6-3 6-4

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Babos/Pavlyuchenkova def. (2) Hingis/Vandeweghe 7-6(9-7) 6-4

Hard to believe Hingis/Vandeweghe are still together; the partnership really hasn’t worked.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Klepac/Martinez Sanchez def. Gavrilova/Kasatkina walkover

Hobart

Singles – Second Round: (1) Kiki Bertens def. Galina Voskoboeva 6-1 6-4

No move for Kiki Bertens yet, but this draw is now very wide open (Bertens and #3 Monica Niculescu are the only seeds left), and if Bertens can win the title, she’ll rise to #20.

Singles – Second Round: Lesia Tsurenko def. (11) Johanna Larsson 6-4 6-4

Not really a big surprise; Lesia Tsurenko came here ranked #61, ten spots below Johanna Larsson, but that’s mostly because she’s hurt all the time. When healthy, Tsurenko is probably the better player. She drops Larsson, a semifinalist last year, to around #55.

Singles – Second Round: (Q) Risa Ozaki def. Lucie Safarova 2-6 6-3 7-5

Lucie Safarova stays stuck around #60.

Singles – Second Round: Shelby Rogers def. Lara Arruabarrena 6-2 6-2

We show Shelby Rogers up to #51 in safe points; make the semifinal and she should hit the Top Fifty.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Schuurs/Voracova def. (1) Niculescu/Spears walkover

Abigail Spears is listed as having a left leg injury, so it appears that Monica Niculescu will be all right for the singles. But it’s pretty disturbing to note that we’ve now had two doubles quarterfinals settled by walkover, and there is one still to be played.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (3) Dabrowski/Yang def. Melichar/Ninomiya 4-6 7-5 10-4

THIS WEEK ON THE WTA:

Sydney (Premier/Hard). Defending Champion: Svetlana Kuznetsova

Hobart (International/Hard). Defending Champion: Alize Cornet

NEXT WEEK ON THE WTA:

Australian Open (Slam/Hard). Defending Champion: Angelique Kerber
