* Top six seeds all reach Sydney quarterfinals; Granollers upset
* Bautista Agut, Lopez bail out of Auckland, Ferrer upset on bad day for Spaniards
Auckland
Singles – Second Round: (2) J. Isner def. M. Jaziri 6-3 3-6 7-6(8-6)
This was John Isner’s first match of the year, and it very nearly became his last of the tournament — he had to save a match point. But this lets him defend his points; if he can win one more match, he’ll rise to #18.
Singles – Second Round: R. Haase def. (3) D. Ferrer 2-6 6-4 7-6(7-4)
David Ferrer is off to a truly lousy start this year, and he was defending semifinalist points. It appears he will fall from #21 to #22.
Singles – Second Round: (4) J. Sock def. (Q) R. Harrison 7-6(7-5) 4-6 6-1
Jack Sock is defending finalist points, and is still in danger of falling from #23 to #24. But, had he lost, he would have fallen to #25.
Singles – Second Round: J. Chardy def. (6) F. Lopez walkover (Lower Back)
Feliciano Lopez won’t rise above the #28 ranking he came in with, and there is a fair chance he’ll fall. Plus, of course, he’ll be going to Melbourne with a bad back.
Singles – Second Round: (7) S. Johnson def. Y. Lu 6-4 7-6(7-4)
The Spanish seeds here had a horrible time, but the three American seeds did just fine! If Steve Johnson wins his next match, he’ll pass Sam Querrey to again become the #3 American, and he will likely return to the Top Thirty.
Singles – Second Round: (8) M. Baghdatis def. (WC) D. Brown 4-6 7-6(7-4) 6-4
Marcos Baghdatis is starting to add points, but it hasn’t done him any good so far.
Singles – Second Round: J. Vesely def. (LL) J. Statham 6-7(6-8) 7-5 6-3
And this completes our rout of Spaniards; Roberto Bautista Agut pulled out, citing a stomach virus. We had four Spanish seeds, and not one made the quarterfinal! That means Bautista Agut will fall from #13 to #14. Jose Statham took his place, but obviously not for long.
You can tell that most of the players who were in qualifying here are long since gone; Statham got a Lucky Loser spot despite being ranked #434. The guys above him presumably are in Melbourne qualifying….
Singles – Second Round: J. Sousa def. (Q) B. Klein 6-3 6-4
Nothing that counts yet for Joao Sousa, but one more win would take him to probably #41, and two would make him Top Forty.
Doubles – First Round: L. Paes/A. Sa def. (1) T. Huey/M. Mirnyi 7-6(7-3) 6-3
Talk about a contest of veterans…. For Max Mirnyi, that means he will have to wait even longer for title #50.
Doubles – First Round: (2) D. Inglot/F. Mergea def. (WC) J. Statham/F. Tearney 7-5 7-5
Doubles – First Round: N. Monroe/A. Sitak def. (3) R. Lindstedt/M. Venus 6-3 3-6 10-8
Sydney
Singles – Second Round: (1) D. Thiem def. (Q) G. Elias 6-7(5-7) 6-3 7-5
Your standard Dominic Thiem useless win: Lots of energy expended, and absolutely nothing to show for it so far; he needs a title to budge his point total.
Singles – Second Round: (2) P. Cuevas def. N. Mahut 6-4 2-6 6-2
No points yet for Pablo Cuevas, either, but he needs only one more win for things to start counting, and he’s likely to rise to #21 even if he doesn’t get it. Nicolas Mahut, a quarterfinalist last year, will fall from #38 to no better than #40.
Singles – Second Round: (3) V. Troicki def. P. Lorenzi 6-3 6-4
Even with this win, last year’s champion Viktor Troicki is in danger of falling to #35 — possibly even a little lower. Paolo Lorenzi, a semifinalist last year, will fall from #41 to #42 or lower.
Singles – Second Round: (4) P. Carreno Busta def. M. Zverev 3-6 7-6(7-4) 6-3
Pablo Carreno Busta has not yet assured that he will stay Top Thirty, but it’s likely. Mischa Zverev added a few points, but won’t rise above his current #50.
Singles – Second Round: (5) P. Kohlschreiber def. (WC) J. Thompson 7-5 6-4
From now on, the points count for Philipp Kohlschreiber; one more win might let him return to the Top Thirty — although there are a lot of guys competing for that Top Thirty spot.
Singles – Second Round: (6) G. Muller def. (Q) M. Barton 6-1 3-6 6-4
Gilles Muller still needs one more win to defend his points, so there is still a chance he could fall below #35.
Singles – Second Round: D. Evans def. (8) M. Granollers 1-6 6-3 6-3
Marcel Granollers loses a few points, but he’s likely to keep the #37 ranking he came in with.
Singles – Second Round: A. Kuznetsov def. (WC) A. de Minaur 6-2 retired (Abdominal Strain)
Andrey Kuznetsov is starting to add points, but so far, he remains below #45.
Doubles – First Round: (1) J. Murray/B. Soares def. N. Almagro/P. Lorenzi walkover (Almagro – Leg)
Doubles – First Round: (4) J. Rojer/H. Tecau def. (WC) M. Reid/J. Thompson 2-6 6-4 10-5
Things are not off to a good start for Rojer/Tecau — they lose early last week, and here they just barely survived against a weak team.
Doubles – First Round: F. Mayer/P. Petzschner def. R. Bopanna/P. Cuevas 7-6(7-5) 6-7(4-7) 11-9
Rohan Bopanna had to make a quick turnaround after winning Chennai last week, and it apparently was a little too much for him.
Doubles – First Round: W. Koolhof/M. Middelkoop def. O. Marach/F. Martin 4-2 retired (Marach – Leg)
Doubles – Quarterfinal: M. Pavic/A. Peya def. P. Carreno Busta/F. Fognini 6-3 6-4
