Roger Federer practiced on Thursday in Dubai and streamed it live for all of his fans to see. More than 500,000 viewers have tuned into watch the session–either live or after the fact. Federer gave the tennis world an all-access pass to the practice via his Periscope and Twitter channels, and a question and answer session followed.
“It’s been a lot of fun, going on court, going crazy,” said Federer, who last played a match in the Wimbledon semis (fell to Milos Raonic in five sets) before being sidelined by a knee injury. “So excited to be playing again. I have no pain now.
“The first three months (of rehab) were extremely slow. It was all about rehabbing the knee, giving it a sufficient break. I’ve now been in full tennis for about two or three weeks.”
Among the highlights of Federer’s Q&A was his opinion that the Rafael Nadal-Carlos Moya partnership is a good fit. He also said that his favorite all-time outfit is the all-black that he often wears during U.S. Open night sessions.
The 2016 season was not a busy one for Federer, who missed Indian Wells, Miami, and the French Open. But the 35-year-old Swiss has been in the news this month, having announced his 2017 comeback while also being named GQ’s most stylish man of the year. He recently confirmed that he will play next month’s Hopman Cup, a team competition in Perth, Australia.
“I know you all haven’t heard much from me while I’ve been recovering from injury,” Federer wrote on Facebook last week. “I’ve missed you! I’m thrilled to be returning to the tour starting in January at the Hopman Cup in Perth, Australia. I’m feeling healthy and ready to be back!”
His fans cannot wait, either. And they have to be even more excited after having their appetite whetted by Thursday’s practice.
