With the professional Tennis season slowing down somewhat following the U.S. Open, I had a little bit of time to do a lot of running. How much? Well, just about every day while training for my first 26.2 mile effort: the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, D.C. on October 30.
Although I was venturing away from my favorite sport, tennis was not totally absent in this marathon endeavor. Not only was I wearing my Chennai Open shirt that I got at that tournament in 2011, but I was also sporting my trusty SOLINCO socks. They may be tennis socks from a technical standpoint, but they get the job done for any athletic competition or even to wear in casual settings. Basically what I’m saying is that I wear SOLINCO socks all the time, and the Marine Corps Marathon was no exception.
At one point during the race, one spectator yelled to me, “Love the tube socks, man!”
It brought a much-needed smile to my face while I was putting in a grueling physical effort for more than three hours.
I was hoping to finish in less than three hours, 26 minutes, and 33 seconds so that I could say I beat Caroline Wozniacki’s 2014 New York City Marathon time. Granted, her performance still would have been more impressive since she had to train for her marathon in the middle of a professional tennis season. But she beat me anyway. Thanks in part to my SOLINCO socks, I was on pace almost the entire way for better than three hours and 30 minutes. Major cramps in just about every muscle in both legs, however, knocked be down to a still-satisfying three hours and 42 minutes.
Less than four weeks later, soon after I returned home from an awesome trip to the ATP World Tour Finals in London, I ran the Atlanta half marathon on Thanksgiving–also in SOLINCO socks. With a big assist to my training for the full marathon, I ran a personal best time of one hour and 29 minutes.
“Like stepping on a cloud, these heavenly socks provide plush cushioning and comfort for your feet during play,” the Tennis Warehouse description of SOLINCO socks reads. “Try a pair and see why this sock has a ‘cult following’ amongst serious tennis players that have tried them!”
I could not have said it better myself…except that SOLINCO socks should have a “cult following” not just amongst serious tennis players, but amongst everyone!
