Eugenie Bouchard named 2016 Tennis Canada Female Player of the Year

Doubles recipient is Gabriela Dabrowski; Bianca Andreescu receives most improved award

 

Tennis Canada announced Friday that Eugenie Bouchard is the 2016 Tennis Canada Female Player of the Year, an honour she is receiving for the fourth consecutive season. Two other athletes are being presented with Excellence Awards as well, as Gabriela Dabrowski is now a four-time doubles player of the year, with rising star Bianca Andreescu the most improved player recipient.

 

“A huge congratulations to Eugenie, Gabriela, and Bianca on your successes this season,” said Kelly Murumets, president and CEO, Tennis Canada. “Eugenie continues to lead the way for Canadian tennis on the WTA circuit, and Gabriela is fast becoming one of the best doubles players on tour. They both made us immensely proud representing our amazing country so well at the Olympic Games this summer. And with Bianca’s great progress and impressive play this year, we can see her one day playing for Canada on such a big stage as well. Best of luck to all of our winners in 2017; we look forward to following along!”

 

Currently ranked world No. 46, Bouchard is also the female singles player of the year. She reached the fifth and sixth WTA finals of her career this season, finishing runner-up at Hobart and Kuala Lumpur. In Rome in May, she earned her most impressive win of 2016 by defeating future world No. 1 (then ranked No. 2) Angelique Kerber in three sets. On home soil, she made the third round of Rogers Cup presented by National Bank, thrilling her hometown crowd in Montreal with two big wins. First, the 2014 Wimbledon finalist ousted Lucie Safarova before dishing a dominant 6-2, 6-0 victory over then-world No. 10 Dominika Cibulkova. The 22-year-old also competed in her first Olympic Games in Rio, where she made the second round in both singles and doubles.

 

Dabrowski continued her rise as one of the world’s top doubles players, hitting a new career-high ranking of No. 37 in October. Halfway through the season, she clinched her third career WTA title, winning Mallorca with partner Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez. She was also a finalist at Nottingham, and semifinalist at five other WTA tournaments including the Premier-level Beijing. Additionally, she made her Olympic debut in Rio, making the second round in doubles with Bouchard.

 

At the age of only 16, most improved player of the year Andreescu has already climbed from a 2015 year-end No. 633 on the pro rankings to No. 297. She captured her first career professional titles at the $25,000 Gatineau National Bank Challenger in August, sweeping both the singles and doubles crowns, alongside fellow junior Canadian Charlotte Robillard-Millette. She also reached the $50,000 Saguenay National Bank Challenger final in October. On the junior circuit, she hit world No. 3 earlier in the year and posted her best result in September, making the Junior US Open semifinals.

 

The Tennis Canada Excellence Awards are selected by a committee comprised of high-ranked Tennis Canada personnel and the country’s top national coaches. Milos Raonic was previously announced as the male player of the year. The 2016 junior recipients will be announced on Monday.

Eugenie Bouchard nommée joueuse de l’année 2016 de Tennis Canada

Toronto, le 2 décembre 2016 – Tennis Canada a annoncé vendredi qu’Eugenie Bouchard a été choisie Joueuse de l’année 2016, un honneur qui lui revient pour une quatrième saison consécutive. Deux autres joueuses reçoivent également un Prix d’excellence, soit Gabriela Dabrowski, qui est la Joueuse de double de l’année pour une quatrième fois, ainsi que la jeune étoile montante Bianca Andreescu dans la catégorie Joueuse la plus améliorée.

 

« Félicitations à Eugenie, Gabriela et Bianca pour les succès qu’elles ont obtenus cette année », mentionnait madame Kelly Murumets, présidente et chef de la direction de Tennis Canada. « Eugenie continue d’ouvrir la marche pour le tennis canadien sur le circuit de la WTA et Gabriela devient rapidement une des meilleures joueuses de double du monde. Elles nous ont toutes les deux rendus très fiers en nous représentant si bien aux Jeux olympiques de Rio. Quant à Bianca, ses résultats nous démontrent qu’elle aussi pourra porter les couleurs du Canada sur les plus grandes scènes internationales. Nous leur souhaitons bonne chance pour l’année 2017 et nous attendons avec impatience de suivre leurs exploits. »

 

Bouchard, qui occupe actuellement le 46e rang mondial, a également été nommée Joueuse de simple de l’année. En 2016, elle a atteint ses cinquième et sixième finales de la WTA à Hobart et à Kuala Lumpur. En mai, à Rome, elle a signé sa plus impressionnante victoire en prenant la mesure de la future numéro un mondiale (alors 2e au classement) Angelique Kerber, en trois manches. À la maison, elle a accédé au troisième tour de la Coupe Rogers présentée par Banque Nationale, réjouissant ses partisans de Montréal en remportant deux gains importants. La finaliste de 2014 de Wimbledon a tout d’abord eu raison de Lucie Safarova avant d’indiquer la sortie de façon convaincante (6-2, 6-0) à Dominika Cibulkova, 10e mondiale. La joueuse de 22 ans a aussi participé à ses premiers Jeux olympiques, à Rio, atteignant le deuxième tour du simple et du double.

 

Dabrowski a poursuivi son ascension sur l’échiquier mondial du double pour se hisser au 37e rang, en octobre. Au milieu de la saison, elle a conquis le troisième titre de la WTA de sa carrière, remportant les grands honneurs à Majorque aux côtés de Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez. Elle était également finaliste à Nottingham ainsi que demi-finaliste de cinq autres tournois de la WTA, notamment à l’épreuve de catégorie Premier de Pékin. De plus, elle a fait ses débuts olympiques à Rio, accédant au deuxième tour du double avec Bouchard.

 

Âgée de 16 ans, Andreescu, Joueuse la plus améliorée, est passée du 633e au 297e rang mondial chez les professionnelles. En août, elle a récolté ses premiers titres professionnels au Challenger Banque Nationale de Gatineau en mettant la main sur les trophées du simple et du double, avec sa compatriote Charlotte Robillard-Millette. En octobre, elle a également participé à la finale du Challenger Banque Nationale de Saguenay. Chez les juniors, elle s’est hissée au troisième rang mondial et a signé sa meilleure prestation en septembre en accédant au carré d’as des Internationaux juniors des États-Unis.

 

Les Prix d’excellence de Tennis Canada sont décernés par un comité composé du personnel du service de l’élite de Tennis Canada et des meilleurs entraîneurs nationaux. Il avait précédemment été annoncé que Milos Raonic était le récipiendaire du prix du Joueur de l’année. Les lauréats de 2016 chez les juniors seront dévoilés lundi.
