NEW NO. 1 MURRAY WINS FIRST PARIS TITLE; KONTINEN/PEERS TAKE DOUBLES

– One day after securing the World No. 1 position in the Emirates ATP Rankings, Andy Murray added another first to his growing resume, winning his maiden title in Paris.

– The Scot claimed his eighth tour-level crown of the year and 43rd in total. He notched a 14th ATP World Tour Masters 1000 title and joins Tim Henman (2003) and Greg Rusedski (1998) as British winners in Paris.

– Murray extended his overall winning streak to 19 straight matches and has now won seven of the nine ATP World Tour Masters 1000 events.

– Isner was trying to win his first Masters 1000 crown but fell to 0-3 in finals at the elite level.

– The 2016 aces champion will finish as the top American for the fifth straight year and in the Top 20 for a seventh consecutive season, rising to No. 19 by reaching the Paris final.

– Henri Kontinen and John Peers continued their late-season surge by winning their first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 team title. Kontinen/Peers had reached the final of the Shanghai Rolex Masters last month (l. to Sock/Isner).

– With the Paris title, they climb one spot to No. 5 in the Emirates ATP Doubles Race To London.

WHAT Andy Murray SAID:

“I was pleased, I felt really nervous before the match, I didn’t feel flat, or anything like that, which that was the most pleasing thing about today for me. Obviously it’s great to win, but sometimes after you achieve something big or something that you maybe didn’t expect, it can be quite easy to have a letdown and feel a little bit flat. I felt really nervous before the match today, and I was happy about that.”

“Hopefully [I] will feel the same way going into the [ATP World] Tour Finals, as well, which I’m sure I will because you’re competing against the best players in front of a big crowd there.”

And Then John Isner Said:

“I knew I had to bring it today if I wanted any chance, because not often do you get to a stage in a tournament like this against a guy like that where he plays poorly or sort of gives you the match. I knew that wasn’t going to be the case. I certainly did a lot of very good things out there. I thought I have given Andy a few tough tussles throughout our careers. I have never won, but that’s why he’s right now the greatest player in the world.”

Kontinen

“It’s a point here and there, and today we got a couple of lucky ones in the Match Tie-break and that obviously helped us in the end.”

Peers

“It was amazing to actually get the first Masters [1000] title for both of us. I know we’ve put in a lot of hard work together and it’s something to cap off a really good year, just before we head into London.”
