Previously 0-2 in total matches together, John Isner and Jack Sock completed a surprising run to the Shanghai Rolex Masters title by beating Henri Kontinen and John Peers 6-4, 6-4 on Sunday afternoon. Isner and Sock won 40 of 51 service points and did not face a single break point while prevailing in one hour and two minutes.

The Americans broke at 2-2 in the first set and for a 4-3 advantage in the second to take complete control. They had other chances in the second, as well, but failed on deciding deuce points at 1-1 and 2-2.

“We just had a lot of fun,” Sock explained. “(We) laughed a lot; kept it light out there. I think that’s why we played pretty well.”

“We both definitely prefer singles, but we also have a lot of fun playing with each other in doubles,” Isner added.

For Sock, this marks his seventh career doubles title and second at the Masters 1000 level (Indian Wells 2015 with Vasek Pospisil). He and Pospisil also won Wimbledon in 2014.

Isner now owns four career doubles titles, including two at the Masters 1000 level (he previously triumphed at the 2011 Rome Masters with Sam Querrey). He also finished runner-up with Querrey in Rome in 2010 and again with Querrey at the Indian Wells Masters in 2012.

Kontinen and Peers would have just about wrapped up a spot in the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals with a title. Still, the Finnish-Australian duo bagged 600 points and climbed from eighth to seventh in 2016 race, passing Treat Huey and Max Mirnyi. Kontinen and Peers are 245 points ahead of Huey and Mirnyi in addition to being 630 points clear of the ninth-place team–defending London champions Jean-Julien Rojer and Horia Tecau.
