Angelique Kerber got her reign as World No.1 off to the perfect start at the Dongfeng Motor Wuhan Open on Tuesday, battling past Kristina Mladenovic in three sets to set up a mouthwatering third round clash with two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova.

 

“It’s always a tough battle against Petra. But I’m looking forward. I mean, here we have a new tournament, a new day tomorrow. So, yeah, I have to play better than today, for sure,” said Kerber.

 

Kerber versus Kvitova forms the first part of a stellar night session on Wednesday in Wuhan, with in-form Caroline Wozniacki also aiming to keep her winning streak alive against old friend and old foe Agnieszka Radwanska.

 

This will be the second time in a week that Wozniacki and Radwanska have played each other after Wozniacki beat Radwanska in semi-finals of the Pan Pacific Tokyo Open en route to winning the title there.

 

“We’ve known each other for 15 years or something, so I’m pretty sure we know each other’s game by now. If we don’t, then we have a problem,” said Wozniacki, with a smile. “I think we know what to expect. It’s just who can execute best.”

 

Defending Wuhan Open champion Venus Williams faces a tricky third round encounter with two-time Grand Slam champion Svetlana Kuznetsova and Great Britain’s Johanna Konta is up against Carla Suarez Navarro. Madison Keys, Karolina Pliskova, Simona Halep and Jelena Jankovic are all also in third round action.

Konta ended the hopes of home favourite Shuai Zhang in Tuesday’s evening session, while Jankovic knocked out last year’s Wuhan Open runner-up Garbine Muguruza.
