September 25, 2016 – Driving in to the Spanish Hills Country Club, I was greeted by one of the staff members and asked if I was there for the tennis event. He then showed me where I can park my car.
As you walk towards the event, the first thing you notice is the little stage setup for the Bryan Bros band to play later in the day. Beyond that is the entry to the pool area, surrounded by wine and food booths. The Pro Exhibition matches were to start at 4:00 pm, so being by the pool and trying some of the wine was a nice way to spend time… but if I had too much I wouldn’t be able to take pictures!
I then decided to go check out the courts to see if they had already started with the Pro-Am matches. The Bryan Brothers’ father, Wayne Bryan, was making the introductions. Soon after, matches begun on every court, with everyone rotating after a certain amount of time. The Bryan Bros were playing, their coach Dusan Vemic was playing, and children from different areas; Ventura, Santa Barbara, and more. Some students from the UCSB tennis team were also there hitting balls with the Bryan Bros.
As I’m standing taking photos, I really start to feel the heat. I take out my phone to check the weather and it’s 102℉… 102! It actually wasn’t that bad. When I was at the BNP Paribas Open tennis tournament back in March, I think the heat weighed down on me more than here in Camarillo. But then again I was there for two weeks…
The Pro Exhibition matches didn’t start until around 5 – 5:30 pm. You had Wayne Bryan as the emcee, John Isner, Stevie Johnson, Mardy Fish, Kaley Cuoco, the lead guitarist of Maroon 5 James Valentine, and Nate Ruess, singer/songwriter of Fun. It started off with Mike Bryan and James Valentine against Bob Bryan and Nate Ruess, and Wayne Bryan handing the mic to Kaley Cuoco.
It was then the Bryan Brothers up against John Isner and Stevie Johnson. At one point Kaley told the Bryan bros that she would donate $10,000 if they do a tweener… I lost count after the fourth tweener!
I left before the Bryan Brothers band came up due to the long line of fans waiting for the autographs… But overall, it was a great and entertaining event for a great cause. It was awesome seeing how much the kids really enjoyed being there and how happy they were to hit a few balls with the Bryan’s. Looking forward to next year’s event!
