DAY ONE NOTES
The United States Davis Cup Team will play in its first home tie since 2014 as it hosts Croatia in the 2016 Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group Quarterfinal. The best-of-five match series will be played on an outdoor hard court at the Tualatin Tennis Center in Portland, Ore., from July 15-17.
This is the fourth time that the greater Portland area has hosted Davis Cup. Portland’s Memorial Coliseum played host to the last three ties, including the 2007 Davis Cup Final, where Andy Roddick, James Blake and Bob and Mike Bryan won the last Davis Cup title for the U.S. over Russia. The Memorial Coliseum also hosted Davis Cup in 1981 and 1984, in which the U.S. won both of those match-ups against Australia.
Friday’s singles play will first feature world No. 26 and the United States’ No. 2 player Jack Sock against Croatia’s top player and world No. 12 Marin Cilic. Sock and Cilic have never faced each other on the ATP World Tour. Sock made his debut on the U.S. Davis Cup team last year in the World Group Playoff in Uzbekistan, where he won both of his singles matches, becoming the first American since John McEnroe in 1978 to win two live rubbers in a Davis Cup debut. He holds a 2-1 record in Davis Cup singles play. Cilic, who won the 2014 US Open singles title and 14 ATP singles titles, holds an 18-8 singles record in Davis Cup play, competing in his first tie in 2006.
In the second match of the day, world No. 16 and the United States’ top player John Isner will face off against world No. 54 Borna Coric. Isner and Coric have also never faced each other on the ATP Tour. Isner, who played in this year’s World Group First Round in Australia, holds a 10-9 singles record in Davis Cup competition, while Coric is 4-4, playing in his first tie in 2013, where he faced Wimbledon champion Andy Murray in his first-ever singles match.
Croatia holds a 3-0 record over the United States in Davis Cup, one of only three countries that hold a winning record over the U.S. The U.S. last faced Croatia in the 2009 World Group Quarterfinal in Porec, Croatia, in which Croatia won 3-2 with Cilic and Ivo Karlovic leading the team. The U.S. also faced Croatia in the 2005 World Group First Round in Los Angeles and in the 2003 World Group First Round in Zagreb, Croatia. This will be the United States’ first home tie since 2014 in Hoffman Estates, Ill., as the U.S. team competed on the road against Great Britain and Uzbekistan last year and faced Australia in Melbourne this year. The U.S. is 111-18 all-time in Davis Cup ties played at home.
Tickets are available and may be purchased by visiting www.usta.com/daviscup or by calling 888-484-USTA (8782).
The winner of this match advances to the World Group Semifinal, held September 16-18, for a chance to compete for the 2016 Davis Cup title.
The U.S. leads all nations with 32 Davis Cup titles and owns the longest uninterrupted run in the World Group, dating back to 1989. The U.S. holds a 216-69 all-time Davis Cup record and has a winning record against 36 of the 40 countries faced and a level record with one country. The U.S. is undefeated versus 22 countries and holds an active winning streak against 35 nations. Founded in 1900, Davis Cup is the world’s largest annual international men’s team competition with 135 nations entered in 2016.
