Queens Club Tennis: Murray Wins in 3 Sets at the Aegon Championships   |

By: Francisco Resendiz

Cumberland sausages and croissants in a take away sack with a cup of coffee was breakfast this morning.  The Queens Club schedule is full today and all the play is on the main court.

The crowds are still arriving 15 min to start. We wonder, how does the tournament manage to accommodate to so many spectators.  We take a look at the schedule and of course Andy Murray is first up vs Cilic – this should be an interesting match.

Andy Murray vs Marin Cilic : 6/3, 4/6, 6/3

Starting with the warm up, both guys seem relaxed and the serves look good. Andy stays out a little longer to practice two very strong serves. Wonder if the players do this as a way of intimidation or to get into the opponents head. One comment you hear on the tour is that tennis at this level is a very mental game.

As long as Murray kept focus and not to upset with himself he played great tennis. In the first set the points he lost were due to his own errors or to his inability to run on the slightly wet grass. Cilic had taken a fall when he was behind 3/1. Murray had taken small slips throughout the first set. Murray’s constant well-placed cross court returns gave him the first set.

On the second set Murray seemed to be frustrated. He had used all three of his challenges thus causing more frustration when he couldn’t challenge a ball called out. On 3/3 Murray goes a far as to hit his thigh a couple times with his racket for missing the return. Cilic plays well and takes the set.

Murray on the third set manages to pull himself together and begins to play the same way he played in the first set. He kept returning very well and across the court.  He also started to serve much stronger, which ultimately gave him the game. Murray finished the match with an ace.

Murray and Raonic are going to the finals.

With all this great tennis we realize that we haven’t had a chance to eat – tea and biscuits can only take you so far… Heading to the buttery or maybe I can meet up with my friend A.T. (she is member of the Queen’s Club) then we can have a really nice dinner at the club – need to grab my sport jacket….

Side Note: The Queens Club Aegon Championships only uses ball girls; I guess any tournament can use whoever they want – Madrid using super models instead of ball kids. Well, we asked a couple people about this and we received the same response, “it makes the tennis aesthetically better and neater.” Obviously not an official answer but I believe it keeps with the Queens Club tennis tradition.
