In-form American CoCo Vandeweghe pulled off the biggest upset so far at the Aegon Classic Birmingham when she knocked out top seed Agnieszka Radwanska with a thrilling 75 46 63 win on Wednesday.
Twenty-four year old Vandeweghe came to Birmingham fresh from winning the second grasscourt title of her career at s’Hertogenbosch last week but victory over Radwanska marked her first win over a Top 5 player. “I’m feeling good. I think I’ve said it before, but I think grass and hard courts definitely accentuates what I do well,” said Vandeweghe. “Her game has been a big puzzle for me in the past. I’ve lost four times before. Some not even remotely close. But I had a lot of confidence going in. This was her first grass court match, also I think it’s like it’s my turn. You lose too many times, it’s like, Well, it’s got to be my turn soon.”
Elsewhere on a weather-affected day at Edgbaston Priory Club, British No.1 Johanna Konta had her first round match against Misaki Doi postponed for the second consecutive day. Konta and Doi were called to the court just before 7pm only to have further rain curtail all play for the day.
Konta could potentially play three matches in one day on Thursday. She will be second on the Ann Jones Centre Court against Doi and, should she win, will return to take on either Wozniacki or Wickmayer in the second round of singles. She is also scheduled to play doubles with Elina Svitolina.
British wildcards Naomi Broady and Tara Moore were both edged out of the tournament on Wednesday despite creditable performances against higher ranked players. Broady lost 46 62 63 to promising young Australian Daria Gavrilova. Moore, who was a quarter-finalist at last week’s Aegon Open Nottingham, was beaten 46 64 64 in the first round by former Aegon International Eastbourne champion Tamira Paszek.
“I don’t think you can expect anything. I’m very grateful to the All England Club for awarding me one and to the LTA for putting me up as a suggestion,” said Moore. “I think it’s great that I have another opportunity to show how I’ve been playing this season, I do think I’ve played well enough to deserve one. Heather, (Naomi) Broady, Jo, Laura, they’re all my friends. I’ve grown up with them and it’s great to see everyone doing so well. We’re definitely helping each other out and trying to give each other encouragement whenever we can. It’s a great group. I do wish the best to all British players.”
Thursday sees a packed order of play. As well as Konta and Wozniacki, Heather Watson, Petra Kvitova and Angelique Kerber are all in singles action, with multiple matches scheduled in doubles.
