Arriving at the Queens Club on the “tube” was very fast and easy. With the credential around my neck the other passengers were more keen to start a conversation. Usually people read or on their mobiles but almost always to themselves.
Today, was different, spoke to three different tennis fans – one was heading to the Aegon Championships to support the Americans – Steve Johnson and John Isner.
The second was not really a tennis fan; was just heading to the tennis because his friends were there and he received a free ticket ( Any tennis fans would’ve loved to be a guest of a Queen’s Club member this week) .
The last fan was a bit more interesting. She was only interested in watching the doubles. I [rudely] asked her if she couldn’t get a ticket for the courts. She said, “I have the centre court ticket (90 GBP) for the ticket but I truly prefer the doubles.”
As soon as the matches started at noon, glad to see no rain, I immediately went out to see the doubles. Our good friend from Australia, Chris Guccione, and his partner Andre Sa were up against the Anderson/Bautista Agut. I saw the tennis fan that I had earlier met on the subway and sat to next to her to watch the match.
Guccione and Sa were moving great and dictating the speed of the game. They were working together very well as a team. The points were very intense, so intense that the British crowd was actually making noise and not just the usual simple applause. Both guys were great on serves and ultimately came out victorious. 6/2, 6/4
On the court next to this match the doubles team of Feliciano Lopez and Marc Lopez began to warm up. It must be the players’ competitiveness that kicks in because they started playing some points and it seemed as you were watching an actual match – big serves and great point rallies. Then the rain starts and the matches are suspended yet Lopez/Lopez continue to practice hoping that the rain would stop sooner than later. Now to wait for their doubles match – will they play as great together as they were against each other…?
Final Scores: Will be updated once matches end
