* Raonic shocked by Ramos-Vinolas; Gasquet blocks Nishikori’s Top Five hopes (is that with Johhny Macs Help?)
Roland Garros
Singles – Fourth Round: (2) A. Murray def. (15) J. Isner 7-6(11-9) 6-4 6-3
This was one of the day’s matches interrupted by rain (they managed to finish the men’s singles, but almost everything else was disrupted), but if the rain changed anything at all in this match, it just increased the performance gap between Andy Murray and John Isner. For Isner, that means he won’t rise above #17 (although it is extremely unlikely that he will fall).
Singles – Fourth Round: (3) S. Wawrinka def. (22) V. Troicki 7-6(7-5) 6-7(7-9) 6-3 6-2
The first two sets of this, obviously, balanced on a knife’s edge; Viktor Troicki had several earlier chances to win the second set several times before finally finishing it off. But he has been playing himself to a frazzle, and ended up with a sore hip; he wasn’t the same after that. He won’t quite make the Top Twenty. Stan Wawrinka wins his tenth straight match here — which still leaves him far behind Rafael Nadal in the contest for #4, but he’s making life tough for Kei Nishikori in the race for #5.
Singles – Fourth Round: (9) R. Gasquet def. (5) K. Nishikori 6-4 6-2 4-6 6-2
And with that, Wawrinka can stop worrying about falling out of the Top Five altogether; Kei Nishikori will stay stuck at #6. For Richard Gasquet, this assures that he will again be France’s #1; this takes him back ahead of Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. As a side effect, that clinches his return to the Top Ten. He might be as high as #8.
Singles – Fourth Round: A. Ramos-Vinolas def. (8) M. Raonic 6-2 6-4 6-4
Milos Raonic has just started working with John McEnroe, and it looks like it’s already taking effect: Raonic has instantly started struggling on clay. He could still rise to #7 — he has a decent lead on all the other contenders for the spot — but obviously he won’t clinch yet. Albert Ramos-Vinolas, #55 coming in, appears to be up to #32. It will be interesting to see what this Spanish clay expert does with a Wimbledon seed!
Doubles – Third Round: (16) Matkowski/Paes def. (4) Murray/Soares 7-6(7-5) 7-6(7-4)
That’s two down in the contest for #1. Jamie Murray won’t regain the top spot; the best he can hope for is to be #2. That doesn’t mean that Nicolas Mahut has clinched, but he’s now very much in the driver’s seat; he has a more than 1500 point lead on the next active player (other than his partner Herbert, who can’t pass him). For Bruno Soares, this might cost him his Top Ten spot.
Doubles – Third Round: (5) Bryan/Bryan def. (12) Stepanek/Zimonjic 4-6 7-6(8-6) 6-3
Nicolas Mahut is now the clear favorite for #1, but the Bryans still have a chance if they can win the title and Mahut doesn’t go much deeper. Nenad Zimonjic may lose his Top Twenty spot as a result of this. Here is how we currently show the Top Ten:
1..(2) Mahut…………..7580
2..(3) Murray………….7535
3..(6) Herbert…………7190
4..(4) Tecau…………..6820
5..(5) Rojer…………..6660
6..(7) BryanB………….6030
6..(8) BryanM………….6030
8..(1) Melo……………5770
9.(10) Soares………….5330
10.(11) Bopanna…………5160
Doubles – Third Round: (6) Bopanna/Mergea def. Baker/Daniell 6-2 6-7(4-7) 6-1
Rohan Bopanna is up to #10 in safe points, with Florin Mergea right behind; if they can win their next spot, Mergea might make the Top Ten and Bopanna will effectively clinch.
Doubles – Third Round: Benneteau/Roger-Vasselin def. (10) Huey/Mirnyi 6-4 6-4
The former champions here really do seem to be back in form. Still no title #50 for Max Mirnyi.
Doubles – Third Round: Cuevas/Granollers def. (14) Nestor/Qureshi 7-6(7-3) 6-4
Once again Cuevas/Granollers show that they are a team to be reckoned with, despite being unseeded. They cost Daniel Nestor any chance of hitting the Top Ten.
Mixed Doubles – First Round: Cornet/Eysseric def. Savchuk/Qureshi 6-3 6-3
Odd that Aisam Qureshi didn’t find a stronger partner. Obviously he paid the price — Cornet/Eysseric aren’t strong either, but they like playing in France.
Mixed Doubles – Second Round: (1) H. Chan/J. Murray def. Kudryavtseva/Bopanna 2-6 6-3 10-8
This goes against the mixed rankings, which would have demoted Chan/Murray to unseeded — putting them right next to Kudryavtseva/Bopanna in the standings! So perhaps we could say that they predicted it would be close. And no doubt Jamie Murray wanted to make up for his disappointment at losing his chance ot be #1 in doubles.
Mixed Doubles – Second Round: (3) Mladenovic/Herbert def. Xu/Draganja 6-3 6-4
Kristina Mladenovic is now a day behind every other team in the women’s doubles draw, so she is going to be very busy in the next few days, but so far, it hasn’t stopped her from winning.
Mixed Doubles – Second Round: (6) Hlavadkova/Roger-Vasselin def. Voskoboeva/Martin 6-2 7-6(7-5)
Mixed Doubles – Second Round: (7) Y. Chan/Mirnyi def. Jankovic/Zimonjic 7-5 6-4
Maybe things don’t look as promising for Serbia’s Olympic Mixed Doubles team as we thought. Either that, or it was just a great day to be named Chan.
Mixed Doubles – Second Round: (8) Vandeweghe/B. Bryan def. Chuang/Kontinen 6-3 6-3
Chuang/Kontinen were last-minute fill-ins in the Mixed, so arguably it’s pretty creditable that they did as well as they did.
