Roland Garros – FRENCH Open Results

Singles – Fourth Round: (4) Garbine Muguruza def. (13) Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-3 6-4

As the opposition gets tougher, Garbine Muguruza seems to be getting better. Two more wins and she is (at least) #3. Svetlana Kuznetsova will certainly rise at least two spots, but the best she can hope for is to be #11. Which means that Venus Williams has now clinched a return to the Top Ten.

Singles – Fourth Round: Shelby Rogers def. (28) Irina-Camelia Begu 6-3 6-4

Shelby Rogers looked so shocked and thrilled after winning this that at least one person wondered if she would even be able to talk. She managed — and admitted, in response to one question, that while she had dreamed of being in a Slam quarterfinal, she hadn’t really been sure it was possible. Whereupon she burst into tears.

Even as the tears came down, her ranking is going up, up, up — about forty places up. She has increased her points by about two-thirds, and will go from #108 to #60 or perhaps very slightly above. Irina-Camelia Begu will probably be #27.

Doubles – Second Round: (5) Garcia/Mladenovic def. Johansson/Parmentier 6-1 4-6 6-2

Hard to believe Garcia/Mladenovic had this much trouble here. Mladenovic’s odds of making the Top Ten are getting better, but she had better hope that they don’t have another bad patch like this one against a solid team.

Doubles – Second Round: Williams/Williams def. Diatchenko/Voskoboeva 7-6(10-8) 4-6 6-0

This had been suspended on Saturday after the first set. That first set had been rocky — the Williams Sisters had been down a break for much of the first set. They were obviously shaky when they resumed, too. More evidence that their doubles is rusty — yes, they won, but it was a near thing against an un-noteworthy team.

Doubles – Third Round: Krejcikova/Siniakova def. (1) Hingis/Mirza 6-3 6-2

We’ve said time and again that Hingis/Mirza hate clay. If ever there was a slam they were going to lose, this was the one. Still — out to Krejcikova/Siniakova? Something was wrong. We’ll have to see what the repercussions are… (apart from the fact that they fail to complete the non-calendar Grand Slam, obviously). Hingis/Mirza will of course stay #1, although they now have to start defending like mad.

Doubles – Third Round: (3) Chan/Chan def. Brengle/Maria 6-2 6-4

Another step toward the #3 and #4 rankings for the Chans, although they haven’t clinched yet.

Doubles – Third Round: Gasparyan/Kuznetsova def. (4) Babos/Shvedova 4-6 7-6(7-5) 7-5

A big blow to last year’s finalist Yaroslava Shvedova, who will lose her Top Five ranking. Timea Babos will be no better than #12.

Doubles – Third Round: (6) Hlavackova/Hradecka def. (11) Klepac/Srebotnik 6-4 6-1

This match plus the next mean that we haven’t made much progress toward settling the Top Ten, but it does mean that Katarina Srebotnik will fall from #18 to no better than #20.

Doubles – Third Round: (7) Makarova/Vesnina def. (10) Goerges/Pliskova 6-1 4-6 6-3

Russia isn’t quite the tennis powerhouse it was eight years ago, but they still have an interesting decision to make for the Olympics. It really is hard to believe they’re picking Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova over Ekaterina Makarova — yes, Makarova is ranked lower right now, but that’s because she’s still recovering from injury; at her best, she’s much better. And she and Elena Vesnina (who of course has no chance of qualifying for the singles) would give Russia a doubles team that would be one of the top favorites (the others top national teams being Garcia/Mladenovic and Hlavackova/Hradecka). Here is how we currently show the Top Fifteen:

1..(1) HINGIS ………….12360

1..(1) MIRZA …………. 12360

3..(5) CHANY …………. 5510*

4..(7) CHANH …………. 5485*

5..(8) GARCIA ………….4885*

6..(4) SHVEDOVA ………..4860

7.(11) MLADENOVIC ………4810*

8..(3) MATTEK-SANDS …….4551

9..(9) VESNINA ……….. 4485*

10.(10) HRADECKA ………..4460*

11.(12) HLAVACKOVA ………4270*

12.(14) BABOS …………. 3670

13..(6) SAFAROVA ………..3316

14.(16) SUAREZ NAVARRO …..3285

15.(17) GOERGES ……….. 3235*

Doubles – Third Round: (9) Xu/S. Zheng def. Krunic/Lucic-Baroni 7-5 7-5

This will certainly put Zheng Saisai in the Top Twenty in doubles, and maybe Xu as well.

Doubles – Third Round: Bertens/Larsson def. Williams/Williams 6-3 6-3

Yes, this was two matches in one day for the Williams Sisters — or at least one and a half (although they didn’t play singles, note). And we already said they were rusty. Still, you have to wonder about how motivated they were. To be fair, Kiki Bertens is on fire these days.

Mixed Doubles – First Round: Cornet/Eysseric def. Savchuk/Qureshi 6-3 6-3

Odd that Aisam Qureshi didn’t find a stronger partner. Obviously he paid the price — Cornet/Eysseric aren’t strong either, but they like playing in France.

Mixed Doubles – Second Round: (1) H. Chan/J. Murray def. Kudryavtseva/Bopanna 2-6 6-3 10-8

This goes against the mixed rankings, which would have demoted Chan/Murray to unseeded — putting them right next to Kudryavtseva/Bopanna in the standings! So perhaps we could say that they predicted it would be close. And no doubt Jamie Murray wanted to make up for his disappointment at losing his chance ot be #1 in doubles.

Mixed Doubles – Second Round: (3) Mladenovic/Herbert def. Xu/Draganja 6-3 6-4

Kristina Mladenovic is now a day behind every other team in the women’s doubles draw, so she is going to be very busy in the next few days, but so far, it hasn’t stopped her from winning.

Mixed Doubles – Second Round: (6) Hlavadkova/Roger-Vasselin def. Voskoboeva/Martin 6-2 7-6(7-5)

Mixed Doubles – Second Round: (7) Y. Chan/Mirnyi def. Jankovic/Zimonjic 7-5 6-4

Maybe things don’t look as promising for Serbia’s Olympic Mixed Doubles team as we thought. Either that, or it was just a great day to be named Chan.

Mixed Doubles – Second Round: (8) Vandeweghe/B. Bryan def. Chuang/Kontinen 6-3 6-3

Chuang/Kontinen were last-minute fill-ins in the Mixed, so arguably it’s pretty creditable that they did as well as they did.

It was the end of an era at Crandon Park for the Miami Open last year. From the Lipton, to the Nasdaq 100, to the Sony Ericsson, to the Sony, to the Miami Open presented by Itau, Key Biscayne saw it all.
