JAMIE MURRAY AND THE DAVIS CUP BY BNP PARIBAS TROPHY TOUR COMES TO DUNBLANE FOLLOWING HISTORIC WIN

Tennis star and local hero, Jamie Murray, and the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Trophy arrived at the Dunblane Sports Club yesterday as part of a national Trophy Tour of Great Britain launched by the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) this month.

Following Great Britain’s historic win against Belgium in the 2015 Davis Cup Final, when the Aegon GB Davis Cup Team lifted the trophy for the first time in 79 years, the LTA wanted to celebrate this momentous occasion by delivering the Davis Cup Trophy Tour across the country.

The Trophy Tour will visit every county and major tennis tournament to thank the tennis community including players, coaches, venues and volunteers who supported the team on its incredible journey. The tour also aims to inspire a new generation to pick up a racket and get involved in tennis.

The event in Dunblane gave people a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see and be pictured with the impressive Davis Cup, while also meeting Davis Cup hero, and World No.1 doubles player, Jamie Murray himself. As well as visiting the club with the trophy, Jamie also surprised school children at Dunblane Primary School and Dunblane High School, both of which he attended when he was younger.

The Davis Cup Trophy Tour will visit over 90 destinations, including the stop in Dunblane. The full list of destinations for the Davis Cup Trophy Tour can be found at www.lta.org.uk/daviscuptrophytour

Jamie Murray, World No.1 Doubles Player, said; “I am excited to be back in my home town with the Davis Cup. Winning was an incredible moment personally and also for all involved and I’m eager to help ensure a lasting legacy following this historic achievement. Seeing everyone’s reaction when they saw the Davis Cup and sharing a bit of that passion we had on court, will hopefully encourage others to get involved and choose tennis as part of their everyday lives”.

Cathie Sabin, LTA President, adds; “Winning the Davis Cup is something many nations only ever dream of and to be able to share this incredible achievement with the British people and the fans that loyally supported the team all the way, is a special moment for all. Success has a way of inspiring and captivating a nation and we want to use this Trophy Tour to bring more children and adults into our great sport and thank the tennis community for believing we could do it.”

Jamie was accompanied on the day by his mother Judy Murray, as part of her work for Tennis on the Road, a movement to increase coaching capacity in Scotland and across the UK, and grow the game at a grassroots level. Supported by the LTA, the programme shows parents, teachers, volunteers and coaches how to deliver starter tennis in their local areas using whatever space they have.

Judy Murray said, “There’s a huge opportunity right now to grow tennis throughout the UK and we believe it’s all about investing in people to make this a reality. Through Tennis on the Road we aim to inspire the next generation and give more adults and kids the chance to be involved by building a workforce of coaches, teachers, parents, volunteers and students. It’s fantastic for Jamie to be able to bring the Davis Cup trophy back to Dunblane and share the victory with our home town.”

Tidbits About The LTA

The Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) is the National Governing Body for tennis in Great Britain, responsible for developing and promoting the sport with a mission to get more people playing tennis more often. It does this under the consumer brand of British Tennis, by working with a broad range of partners and over 25,000 volunteers, to grow the game in communities, clubs and schools. The LTA represents the interests of over 350,000 British Tennis Members, men and women, girls and boys across the country, playing on more than 23,000 courts. The LTA runs and supports a network of 11,500 approved tournaments for players of all ages, the corner-stones of which are five grass court pro events leading up to Wimbledon, held in Nottingham (ATP & WTA), Birmingham (WTA), Queen’s Club-London (ATP) and Eastbourne (WTA), all of which are title sponsored by Aegon, our lead Partner who is helping transform the sport in this country. The LTA works in partnership with its charitable entity, the Tennis Foundation, to provide a tennis provision for more than 20,000 schools, disadvantaged youth as well as promoting tennis as an inclusive sport for anyone with a disability. Tennis on the Road

Tennis on the Road was created to increase coaching capacity in Scotland and grow the game at a grassroots level. Spearheaded by Judy Murray, and supported by the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA), the programme takes tennis on the road to deprived communities that may not otherwise have the chance to experience tennis. Featuring engaging and creative activities, Tennis on the Road is tailored to appeal to parents, teachers, volunteers and sports developments teams. The programme focusses on how to deliver simple fun sessions with much of the content based on the types of games that Andy and Jamie Murray loved to play when they were children.

Tennis on the Road launched in October 2014 and has since delivered 19 separate roadshows, visiting different locations across Scotland each month, including visits to the Isle of Arran and Thurso. Over 2,200 adults have been trained and over 35,000 children have had access to tennis as a direct result of the programme. Tennis on the Road is actively growing a workforce of people to nurture the game, in addition to enabling more children to experience and enjoy tennis.
