AEGON CHAMPIONSHIPS
21st April, 2016
The World No.7 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will return to the Aegon Championships for the first time in two years after confirming he will join defending champion Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal and Stan Wawrinka at The Queen’s Club, 13th-19th June.
Tsonga, who reached the final in 2011, will also face stiff competition from the second best player in the world this year, Milos Raonic, and the spectacular talent of 20-year-old Australian Nick Kyrgios. He can’t wait to return.
“I’m really happy to be back,” said Tsonga. “It’s a special place for me because I entered the Top 100 for the first time at The Queen’s Club and reached the final of the Aegon Championships in 2011. The grass courts are perfect, we get to play in London in front of all these nice people, and I want to play good tennis there again.”
The Frenchman is the fourth Top 10 player to confirm his participation in the tournament.
In 2011, he played in one of the tournament’s great finals, narrowly missing out 3-6, 7-6, 6-4 to Murray. Afterwards, Murray said: “Jo was playing a different sport to me in the first two sets. He is so much fun to watch, but not much fun to play against!”
Stephen Farrow, Tournament Director of the Aegon Championships, said:
“Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is a fantastic addition to what is becoming one of the strongest player-fields in the history of the Aegon Championships. Over the years, when we have asked our ticket-holders who they have most enjoyed watching, Jo has been one of the players at the top of the list. We are delighted that he will return to The Queen’s Club in 2016.”
Tara McGregor-Woodhams, Head of Brand and Sponsorship Aegon UK, added: ”Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is one of the best and most entertaining tennis players in the world, and we are thrilled at the prospect of seeing him up against Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal, Stan Wawrinka and the rest of the stars at the Aegon Championships in June.”
