Novak Djokovic won his sixth Miami Open title in routine fashion defeating Kei Nishikori 6-3,6-3. It is Novak’s third straight Miami Open title and he ties Andre Agassi’s career record of six Miami Open titles. Djokovic also surpassed Rafael Nadal’s record of 27 Master’s 1000 titles and Roger Federer’s career prize money record as well. The most interesting part of Djokovic’s victory, to the standing room only crowd, was not what he achieved on the tennis court. It is what Novak said afterward.
Djokovic said that, “I have very reliable sources and intel that say that this tournament will be on Key Biscayne for a long time to come. The tournament makes money, is very successful and popular with the players and is not going anywhere.” He said this to a standing ovation from the Miami crowd who could not be happier with that statement.
Kei Nishikori felt he did not play his best tennis in the final because Djokovic is playing so well that he puts a lot of pressure on you and forces you into playing poorly. Nishikri’s knee seemed to be giving him trouble the last four games of the match but he said it was ok and did not effect the outcome. Djokovic alluded to Nishikori’s knee as well in his post match speech and hoped it is ok.
Novak Djokovic is close to invincible right now. Physically and emotionally he is in a very secure and confident place. He won Indian Wells and did not lose a set in the Miami Open. Djokovic was forced into one tiebreaker the whole tournament. Very few players in history have shown this type of endurance.
What is the strategy to defeat Djokovic? The players obviously have no idea what it is. But when Djokovic was asked how he would play against himself he would not answer. He replied that he would know exactly how to beat himself and what strategy to use. Unfortunately for everyone else the world’s #1 is not offering any clues. What is even more telling is that Djokovic feels he has started 2016 better than 2015 where he was one match short of a calendar Grand Slam. Welcome to Novak’s tour..
