The 18 year old American Taylor Fritz showed why he is so highly regarded as a HOT prospect against David Ferrer. Taylor battled Ferrer where he held two set points in the first set and then lost it in a tie breaker. Fritz displayed all aspects of a well rounded game with a big serve, precise and powerful groundstrokes classic volleys. He also showed great concentration and competitive will. However David Ferrer being the consummate pro and top ten player took young Fritz to school in the second set, closing out an entertaining match. (A Recent Graduate of ATP University, but not a Highschool Graduate yet)
Juan Martin was slated to play Roger Federer but Roger had to pull out of the tournament with a stomach virus. Del Potro’s countryman, a lucky loser, Horacio Zeballos, was his new opponent. Although a crowd favorite here Del Potro was very limited in his ability to execute his two handed backhand. DelPo elected to slice 60% of his backhands with one hand and looked in some discomfort with his left wrist. The doctor and trainer came out twice to check his wrist. He finished the match but lost 6-4,6-4.
Venus Willliams fought hard but lost to Elena Vesnina 6-0,6-7(5), 6-2. Venus got off to a slow start and lost the first set at love. She then battled back hard and won the second set tie-breaker 7-5. In the 3rd set she just seemed to lack the energy to extend the set. However Venus showed all the signs of being a great champion and she belies her age of 35 yrs and 9 months.
